My inability to watch certain scenes in media (also some BNA and Zootopia)

I finally watched BNA and I really liked it. I went in with totally different expectation. Kind of like a slice of life story of an outsider living in a new land. I did not expect some badass action and fight scenes!

And Michiru is a great character. Love her tail poofing up XD
But why the heck would you wanna become a human again, with those sweet ass super powers?

However BNA once again reminded me of why I can't watch certain scenes. Scenes I dread and prevent me from re-watching movies I like.

It's the trope of when one of the good characters (usually protagonist) breaks the law or steers into an awkward situation or makes a fool of him/herself. Like when Michiru gets told she should register and then she runs off to find her wallet. Or when she spy's on people in the hospital despite being told to stay away.

Luckily the examples in BNA are not quite as harrowing. For example a really big gut wrench is when Judy Hopps abandons her duty to issue parking tickets to chase after the weasel. Even on first time watching it made my stomach twist, cause I knew she'd get into trouble for it.
And later on when she calls the others thinking she caught the panther only for it to be gone. Similar feeling. It makes me wanna scream "Don't do it!"

And it has gotten worse over the last years. I used to just not like such scenes in movies, but recently it has gotten to a point where can't rewatch Zootopia for example (unless I am fast forward through) because of fear of these scenes.

It's so stupid. Those people are not me and yet I feel the awkwardness and the embarrassment as if it was happening to me. I feel this is one more sign of how worn down I am.

It's not all flashbacks and emotional fits like in the movies and TVs, and in fact rarely is. =3

I /live/ this, but with people being unreasonably hostile to each other.  this is PTSD.  oh, my dear perverted donkey...  *gives you all the hugs!*

I do get flashbacks to awkward moments of my life. Do those count?

Yeah thats literally the textbook definition of getting triggered.

Therapy can help? Some times? Not everyone anyway.

I might try some therapeutic talks. ^^

That sounds a little like me with Evil Dead 2. I'm not scared by the parts that are supposed to be scary, but I'm deeply troubled by the mistaken identity scene.

I don't know the game, but I know what you mean. Thanks

I get this too, but for scenes that are awkward - like, socially awkward scenes make my soul scream, torture on a whole other level. Part of why I prefer horror movies to other genres like comedy or romance which always shoe horns in an intentionally awkward scene - it is like spiritual nails on a chalkboard, if that makes sense

Yes. For me its not every type of awkward scene but many are unbearbale.

It seems so. Many have responded as such.

I experience that too; it's why I can't watch most TV shows and movies, and couldn't even as a kid. It's like a strong second-hand embarrassment that I can't shake.

For me its just painful to watch. Not sure if it is embarrassment that I feel.

It's not PTSD. It's just being fed up with bad writing.

Well it happens in well written shows too.

True, but in well written stories, it's not as noticeable. The same way that a movie can have a lot of flaws, even big ones, but because the rest of the story works together so well, they're generally overlooked. Now, of course these flaws can't be in a major plot point, else the entire story would fall apart.

The whole idea of the good guy having to break the law for a good reason is a very, VERY old trope. Think back to the old western movies where a law man has to do something evil in order to stop the bad guy. When done well, it's a good narrative about how sometimes the greater good requires people to accept a lesser evil, or how the spirit of the law is more important than the letter of it. The problem is that it gets used a lot more often than it should, especially in stories where it doesn't exactly add anything.

In the case of BNA (which I also recently watched), I believe you're talking about the part where Ogami freaks out and tries to smash up the lab. In this case, these actions fit the character's established background. It also sets up a reason for him to go to the crime boss for help towards the end of the series.

In the case of Zootopia, while it does serve the story later (they wouldn't know to track down the weasel later if she hadn't caught him that first time), it's honestly more of a case of bad character tropes. Judy is supposed to be the 'do anything girl', which is a character type we've been seeing far too much of lately. Doesn't care about orders or doing what they're supposed to, they just 'know' they're in the right and will be proven right later on. It's a side-case to the classic Mary Sue character, honestly. While not as egregious as that, it's still a sign of bad writing when it's over-used like it is these days.

I was thinking about that. I know the word on my language, but I didn't know how was spelled in English.

I have a lot of vicarious embarrassment. I'm unable to watch some kinds of comedy, the kind on where the characters do embarrassing things, because I feel even worse than the character being embarrassed. For example, movies like "American Pie". I just can't, it totally overwhelms me.

It's similar but not quite the same. I am not embarrassed for them, it just hurts to watch. And it can be non-embarrassing scenes too.

I understand what you mean! I do still finish them though. If I don't then it will only make me beat myself up for not finishing them! The worst one is Beaststars for me though I still find it very enjoyable. Lots of cringe scenes but the characters/VA are fluid. I LOVE IT!

I am watching beastars too at the moment. As much as I like it, it always costs some willpower loading the next episode.
