Updated Discord Troubles

So, Discord has closed my account for violating their ToS. They refuse to tell me what part of the ToS I broke, but I'm not going to argue, odds are, I did. I'm not going to try to fight it, as honestly there is no way to do so, even my requests to find out what I did wrong or to cancel my subscription to Nitro are just met with a boilerplate 'you broke the ToS, we aren't reinstating your account, go away' message. Anywhere from today to several months from now their automated systems will delete my account, at which point all the servers I made should go poof.

It's been a lot of fun, it was a great service, but it's gone to me now.

I don't know if I will ever rebuild Dana's Lab anywhere. I don't know where I could even do it. If you have options, I'm open to hearing them, but Discord is kind of the new global Facebook for communities like that, so no matter where I end up, it would be marginalized. Ah well.

I want you all to know, I don't hold this against Discord, I'm not looking to call any boycotts or anything here. They have to defend themselves as a company, and comply as best they feel they can to laws in countries around the world, some of which are draconian.

Pixiv seems to be very acceptable with risky stuff...maybe it could work out.

Pixiv is an image posting site, not a social network.

I don't do any kind of pure-social network stuff, so for me image posting sites are the suitable social network experience.
I think sites are what you can make of them, and how to make the best of them...whatever. Good luck with finding the replacement site for your stuff! =;3

Telegram?

I'm considering it, but I don't know how well their server system works.

you can literally make a bunch of groups and link them in each other (which i did), i think theres just no voice chat, but you can make a voice message and send those.
it's a bit like whatzapp

Discord is one of the puritan strongholds. Go Telegram, they explicitly state in their rules that they don't know and don't care for what people do in private chars and groups.

Not just discord, patreon and even telegram have targeted both lewd things, and telegrams had moderators remove furry groups specifically.

I know about Patreon. Telegram, though... Are you talking about groups or channels? There is a big difference.

public (I think, I got an invite though) group channels that involved porn that were made by people.

According to their rules, channels and bots are moderated. Groups and chats - no. And this is the first time I hear about a group being moderated.

public channels don't allow porn i think?
But you can have a private group and they don't care about those.

Baraag.net will allow it.

What is Baraag?

baraag.net It's not really a chat. More like a social network. Does allow any & all art though. Part of Mastodon.

They only need to comply with the laws of whichever country they're based in

You have nothing to lose by issuing a chargeback if you paid for nitro by credit card. Let your credit card company deal with their bullshit.
Danaume

If they charge me, I will. So far they have only charged me for time used.

This is my main issue with Discord - it's completely centralized. Discord has access to every message, every channel, every link sent over their thing. They could even listen in to audio - or have their AI listen in and statistically analyze it for marketing - and you could do nothing about it. They can change their TOS on a whim, can kick anyone out for whatever reason, shut any "server" down for the same, or make every-day features premium-paid-for from one day to the other.
It could even just shut down from one day to the other.

This is the danger with centralized services. The internet by nature is not centralized but people increasingly use centralized services which impose arbitrary rules which they change arbitrarily.

There's still IRC.  It, too has bots. You'd need external links for stuff like streams and voice chat, but unlike discord its not centralized. Anyone can get a channel on irc.furnet.org or any other IRC network, and setting one's own IRC network up is actually not that hard. And its completely free.

IRC has a higher learning curve but it definitely works.  Only thing I don't like about it (which is unavoidable since it by design is difficult to monitor) is that you can't go back up and look at what's been posted while you were logged off.
