Calling all nerds

Hello my nerdy brethren. I am hosting a D&D session soon, its going to be about 12-15 hours of content, and I need some reasonably dank music for the inevitable combats.

I have a small library of songs I go to, but I could use more in my arsenal.

Down below are some examples of stuff I use / have used in the past to give you an idea of what I'm looking for.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xc1vfyBQ7rA&t=1m11s <---  (Time stamped at 1 min 11 seconds, the minute following that is crack for my ears ♥) This is 100% perfect music for an intense, crucial battle, but alas only lasts for a short spurt uwu. I need more songs like this in my pocket to keep the mood going.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=apR_ZfO93Z4&list=PL... <--- these are the kinds of songs I like for less intense moments.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5V0kzLYkYTM I mix it up a bit. Stuff like this is more cartoony, but has a nice vibe for a battle at sea and the like.

There's always Mars, the Bringer of War from Holst. Nice and martial with lots of trumpets and drums.

It does have that kind of epic movie fight scene vibe going for it, doesn't it? Which is kind of why I thought to suggest it. That and it's powerful and exciting while being restrained enough, I think, that it shouldn't interfere with the game.

Also, I'm a tiny bit jealous. My old DM never thought to use cool music to go with the fights! The members of your group should consider themselves lucky you go to this kind of effort!

I stole the idea from my last dm tbh uwu

Oh you come to the right person LOL. I am a dungeon master myself and I frequently listen to various video game soundtracks movie soundtracks and classical pieces to find fitting music for specific battles. If you’re looking for just general songs I can help you out. However, if you’re looking for more specific songs like for a specific scenario please feel free to reply below this comment.

For starters I’m going to list a few songs that I’ve heard/used myself that just gives you like a general sense of let’s go fighting so to speak. You may not like these choices but I do and we’re all free tomorrow and opinions right.
Battle 1 from Octopath Traveler https://youtu.be/JR4tBJYiEew
Battle 2 from same game https://youtu.be/8qsVlqvx_pM
Battle 3 from the same game https://youtu.be/hdaXJuvelyU
Steel for humans from the Witcher 3. https://youtu.be/VCAnW11ZmwM
Silver for monsters from Witcher as well https://youtu.be/LDnENTDuAiI

If you want something more heroic then there’s Squad E Fights on from Valkyria chronicles 4 https://youtu.be/kMdbIeLQ84E
Exciting battle from Valkyria chronicles 2 https://youtu.be/Wc1rtWKSluI

And finally if you want more intense battle music there is
Decisive Battle 2 from Octopath traveler https://youtu.be/3gul2Oi7V1c
Decisive battle one from the same game. https://youtu.be/4MGfXYbOxGo
Broken vessel from hollow knight. https://youtu.be/Sqz2Cn7Cd4s
Mantis lords from same game. https://youtu.be/5VjC20Jj3gk

I could go on if you want me too LOL. And again if you need more specific sort of scenarios like a battle at sea or a battle in a forest or battling a certain kind of monster please feel free to reply. Hope these help.

Oh hey, octopath has a few goodies. I use witcher songs, as well as two steps from hell occasionally. Good picks ;0

I know right! Octopath Traveler has one of the best soundtracks in my opinion. If my players knew how often I used it’s soundtrack for battles, setting the sceneries of towns/locations, and overall conveying certain feelings they would think I’m obsessed with the game (which I am at times). It just has a perfect soundtrack for my style of DMing. Glad you liked the picks!

Hmm, I generally look to songs by Future World Music, Two Steps from Hell, etc.

But here are some specific offerings:
Hans Magnus & CRZYSND - Turning Point, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M3RHxkwLy_Q
Nightwish - Ghost Love Score, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uN3yqMr3ffY

These aren't bad songs, but they're a wee bit... overpowering for my tastes for tabletop stuffs uwu

Fair enough. I rarely use music during gaming except during major boss battles.

Oooo. Nerd music! One of the great things about running the session is curating the tunes.

I'm a sucker for drumming myself, so here's something that works well for all levels of combat. https://youtu.be/ZagsLrNzg3I

Something along the cartoony line, for fun and exciting combat: https://youtu.be/IxM1tjTvFAc

I know you asked for battle music, but here's some travel/background tunes if you'd be interested: https://youtu.be/IPHHZg5HifQ

Two Steps from Hell is always good for something freakin' epic: https://youtu.be/qwJj2EpC8vg

Here's one I just stumbled across looking for suggestions, also on the "epic" side: https://youtu.be/HEf_xrgmuRI

I'm assuming you want instrumental pieces more than anything else. In the off chance you'd be interested in lyrical words, have some Within Temptation: https://youtu.be/PhjKjtdu-_c

Yoko taro games and their awesome soundtracks. =3

Unlimited SaGa is a game with a fantastic soundtrack, amazing hand painted world and a boardgame like world map and dungeons.. too bad it teaches you almost nothing about how to play/survive it.
I also suggest SaGa Frontier 2's music. Has some real gems. Though it is ps2 and sounds it. Im big on game music.

I've found that some of the medieval Star Wars music I've come across works well for a variety of settings and situations. Try searching "bardcore" and the many suggestions that pop up are sure to provide a soundtrack or some sort of inspiration.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FnOEGvEKFSQ
Personally, I find that even songs like "Through the Fire and Flames" come across as better for a tavern, festival or street faire, but it might be a fun way to award small bonuses to players who recognize the songs, or as a way to help set the tone for a scene as you're describing it.

Also, RollfForFantasy.com (partner site to FantasyNameGenerators.com) has plenty of thematic music available for free.

Syrinscape.com has some battle (and other) music, and sound effects for tabletop gaming.

I've used it before, it's decent.

Stumbled across this little gem a couple of days ago. A bit driving but might be good for a big Battle or escape scean. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=uT3SBzmDxGk

Something for a Port/City Encounter https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=Z95ABVnqHmw

Anything from "Two Steps from Hell" would be a good recommendation.

Belatedly, but I didn't notice anyone mentioning Shadow of the Colossus (https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PL4619CDF2FD0D8394)
It can be epic https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sr2nK06zZkg&list=PL...
It can be melancholy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QzbvcsNPEEE&list=PL...
It can be distinctive background https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vk5Q7ALNQpc&list=PL...
(it's mostly epic)

The Total Annihilation soundtrack was also great for Star Wars-like music in the first half, background in the second
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLrwWaT3GWAEdMVCn...

Rise of Nations had a great OST too, good for its more atmospheric songs:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hiPJaeTV35M&list=PL...

Count yourself lucky if your group likes that sort of stuff, mine yelled at me for "forcing a mood on their characters" when I tried adding thematic music.
