In a small society, the consequences of being an asshole are immediately apparent. One can see this in action in smaller a chatroom. Assholes are removed immediately
In larger societies however, the network of laws and red tape makes those consequences complicated. Don't get me wrong- Large-scale society simply does not function without a net of laws and the uniform enforcement of those laws. But being an asshole isn't specifically prohibited by law, although the traditional consequences of being an asshole may very well be lawfully restricted.
What I am getting at, is that assholes have spent a few generations being free from any large scale, long term, or even immediate consequences for being an asshole.
I implore you all to change that, to the best of your ability. I'm not asking you to break any laws, but if you are in a position to administer consequences to assholes, you do so. If you're a sysop, ban the fuck out of people from your servers and chatrooms. If someone is an asshole in public and you have the privilege to intervene, you intervene, you step between the asshole and their victim, You engage the victim, blow off the asshole, and *administer physical consequences if that asshole touches you.* ..If you're able.
If jerks do not receive consequences, They will not change. They will not get their comeuppance. "Karma" will not come for them. You must be that agent.
