Why I Discourage People from High School fanfics

I figured I would bring this up after someone noting me about a Sonadow high school fanfic. I have my particular reasons why I try to discourage people from posting Sonadow high school fanfics on Sonadow.com.

One of the reasons I dislike this genre so much is because (1) It seems like its all anyone knows how to write, but Sonic, while of a high school age, does NOT attend high school. Neither does Shadow. It's been tried in the Archie comics and it utterly failed.

(2) On TV, anything nowadays involves high school. I can't even watch Disney Channel anymore cause almost every show involves kids in school or high school. Some of my favorite Disney shows as a kid did not go anywhere NEAR the topic of high school. I'm so sick of the topic. Sonic was one of the few things I liked cause it had nothing to do with high school. To see these fan fics inject more high school nonsense into the series makes me steer away from the genre further. I want people to try and find more original inspiration without relying on the old high school plot as a crutch. It's old, it's done, its BORING.

You know, my comics revolved around high school, too.
What was your opinion on them..? xD;

Honestly, I was just trying to focus on Silver and Sonic's relationship, while trying so very hard to ignore the high school elements. Sorry, but I just can't get into the high school thing ^^; To me, it just doesn't mix well with Sonic.

yes, the high school bit is a giant handy cap for writers.

I like this jernal btw :D it helps people realise this :3

I already deal with high school on a weekly basis, I do not wanna read about it. Stuff that goes on in high school is some of the stupidest things.

While I understand your dislike, I would just like to add my two cents.

People write and like high-school themed stuff because it's easy and it's safe. It's one of the few Alt-Universe topics that will be read and can be written without:

1) Requiring Doctorate-level research before anyone takes the writer seriously,
or
2) Requiring page after page of disclaimers on the writer's part because the premise has the potential to offend somebody, especially those people whose business it is to be offended by everything ever.

I hope that this didn't come off as ranty, but, for those who want to write alt-universe stories, how do you suggest they get around the two items I listed without writing a High School story?

No one needs those two items when writing a non high school story. All it takes is finding something unique and going with it. Hell, I NEVER see any disclamer on fanfics except for stating that they do not own the characters. I have seen many lovely, well written fanfics that have nothing to do with highschool, nothing to do with research, nor a ton of disclamers and the writers are taken seriously.

I do not write for Sonic fandom so I don't know how it goes, but I do read in and write in fandoms where a Doctorate-level amount of research is required before writing anything, and fandoms where enormous blocks of Warnings Text (what I mean by disclaimer text) is required before writing anything that is remotely "problematic" are required.

Also, as someone who tends to write things that are "left of center", I know the wonderful treatment that such works tend to get--they're the first thrown under the bus of "badfic crusaders", as "proof" that the fandom is being destroyed. As for High School-themed AUs, they're fairly innocuous fluff, and the writers mean no harm.

I guess you haven't read any of the lovely Zelda Fanfics over on both FF.net and FFA.net There is one such fic there that has nothing to do with high school and sticks to the story of the game, but with a whole nother level add to it and new twists. 147 chapters before it was finished and these were not small chapters. Its sequel is is not based on any of the Zelda games is already at over 50 chapters, again these are long well written chapters. This writer does not do any 'doctorate-level amount of research' and no one really should. Nor does she have huge amount of warning text at each chapter, just the little warning that the chapter contains a lemon scene (if it has one and even then she will have a line infront and after that part stating 'start of lemon' 'end of lemon')

I have seen many lovely fanfics that are of orginal setting as well as the setting of where fandom came from (aka Zelda based around the game, Sonic being based around the games/comic/or series being prime examples of that) without need to go into the highschool theme.

And I'm sorry, I've seen many high school themed fanfics utterly just horrid in terms of how its written and how the characters are played out. Many of them I cannot even stomach it is so badly written.

Wish I had seen this topic earlier. I am 100% agreed with you when it comes to fanfic and high-school (also the disney channel, which is now completely destroyed by those series).
Sonadow fanfictions should be focused on Sonic and Shadow, not the places we hate!

Don't get me wrong, school is great for education, but you NEED a brake from it, please....
