Though there are many examples against this being shown in the signs of science we can account for this by what most define as a sense of spirituality. Under the scrutiny of genealogy, neurology, and psychology we see that measures of requiring the spirit has evolved into mankind. Its primary purpose is vague but the most agreed upon effect that it has is Axiomatic Organization.
That is to suggest it helps in organizing your most fundamental assumptions. Like 2 lines extended parallel will never touch or 1+1 = 2. Though these seem like the basics of logic axiomatic organization extends Further out into abstract thinking which is a necessity for understanding symbols, higher mathematics, and in-depth analysis and meaning. It is in this sense that we could say ironically that people require Fantasy to be human.
Spirituality doesn't seem to be something that can be removed from the human experience even under what most consider the apex of non-spirituality. Atheism there still stand many religious circles such as Buddhism, jadism and other such sects that do not directly believe in a god but still retain the sense of Spirituality found in religions that do maintain a god.
Even outside such structures of religion many hold ideals that resemble systems akin to a god or spiritual affect. Examples would by certain economists faith in the invisible Hand of the Market. Yet quite remarkably the greatest example of humans needing fantasy to be complex thinking beings is the very Irony of the value of a Dollar.
Some may say a dollar is tied to gold or some other form of material with intrinsic value. But this is a lie in the sense that the Dollar was taken off gold in the 70s and allowed to float on literally just Trust, and that gold or any other metal has an intrinsic value beyond "shiny rock" . Many assume value is produced by work or at other times by simple supply and demand or even more by just what anyone is willing to pay for it. But material or labor only has value when held in relation to the effects and interactions they have with other forms of material and labor.
We could have complete electrical grid on nothing but nuclear or solar with far greater security for over 20 years yet the cultural and emotional element of our society was firmly captured toward fossil fuels. Despite causing less security the society rewards companies that deal with a dwindling resource that forces us into compromising ties with less than shakey allies and ultimately drives us into those conflicts that make such an abusive relationship more codependant that Jerry and Beth from Rick and Morty.
In this measure its seems that the Mind or Spirit of the world is pushed into degrees of repetition with slight alterations. These cycles of history when taking certain statistical measures act like biological systems and can be mathematically charted as each as an individual measure of cause and effect driven by logic and emotion of humanities primary axioms pushing a slow yet ever increasing spiral toward change. The virtual realms of the mind and emotion touching the physical to drive the wheel of destiny. For what exactly; we can only look toward the driving factors of humanity. Is it still merely fear of Death or desire of Procreation or a little more? Perhaps we don't need much more to make choices off the beaten path? Who can say I'm here to watch Porn
