Computer mice, plushie mice, and giant fiery dragons of death

Since the Cataclysm hit World of Warcraft, I've been spending a lot of time there, having a lot of fun. It's deliciously ironic that the rain of fiery death and destruction that Deathwing has brought has made life far less pleasant for the fictional inhabitants of Azeroth, yet much more fun and enjoyable for us players.

On that note, among the Christmas presents I was allowed to open early was a gift card for Amazon, so I would like to solicit recommendations from those of you knowledgeable about computer mice.

If you even KNOW someone who's well-versed in brand-name peripherals, please ask. It's a nerdly failing of mine that I'm so clueless on what to look for.

Desired characteristics:
Optical
Wired
Must have scrollwheel that clicks down as a third button, and at least two (preferably three or four) extra thumb-buttons on the left (for right-handed user).
Must not have a ZILLION such buttons (I've seen ones that have like twelve on the thumb area... that's way too many to manage!)

The mouse I have works amazingly well considering how many years I've had it, and feels very good to my hand ("Microsoft Wheel Mouse Optical USB and PS/2 Compatible"), but in my gaming I find I need more buttons easily accessible on my right hand. So far in two games (Left 4 Dead and WoW) I've needed to take my hand off the mouse to hit a voice chat key, which is really getting to be a bother. Plus in WoW my characters have so many abilities I want to hit on a moment's notice, I really need to have more available to my right hand.

This morning, I awoke to find that our DSL modem, age unknown but likely more than five years, is getting finicky in its old age. A few calls to tech support later, it's working again but will need a replacement soon. However, getting it working meant that Zephie and I could place video calls to friends and family to open our Christmas loot with them watching. I don't want to brag about all the awesome stuff I got, especially given the embarrassment of having no job and thus very limited ability to reciprocate... but I will mention that Alex got me plushies of Tanya and Yasha from An American Tail to go with my Fieval plushie.

SO MUCH CUTENESS!! <3

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16... Exact mouse that I use. Best gaming mouse I've ever had.

Why is it so good? Why is it so much better than other brands out there?

The grip is perfect, it feels natural to hold. The buttons are in good locations and there's not so many that they clutter the mouse up. I've had it for about five years and it hardly shows any wear other than it's been rubbed down smooth, so it's extremely durable. I think that sums it up well enough. I'm sure there are other mice with good characteristics as well, but this is my mouse of choice.

Well you probably got me on durability. I've gone through about 2 of these mice in the same 5 years. That's one thing about high-end stuff is that it sometimes doesn't last because it's focus is on performance and not durability.

The extreme durability pretty much sells me right there; I've been using my current mouse for longer than that and have yet to have any function issues with it aside from needing more buttons. Looks good! Now I'll see if I can find that model on Amazon so I can use my gift card. Fingers crossed!

I did find it on Amazon, and the price with free shipping was so close to the amount of the gift card that I ended up spending all of it and only using $1.11 of my own money!

I got something like this. It has 3500dpi (over 2x the Logitech mouse) and 1000hz "ultra polling" which is "1ms response time" so it responds within 1ms from when you move your hand. Most other mice have about 125hz but it's hard to find out since most companies don't even advertise their response times. o.o

No offense, but I'm leaning towards SpearWolf's recommendation, on account of the durability and the fact that the link you gave is specifically a left-handed mouse (I'm right-handed). I haven't really noticed any problems with not having a "high-performance" gaming mouse because my twitch speed and targetting accuracy are poor to begin with and I'm not really an FPS gamer: I play L4D2 and TF2 casually, the Half-Life series whenever a new one comes out, Doom 1 through 3 and a few miscellaneous others, but what I'm really looking at a new mouse for is for WoW, and anywhere else where I want to use voice chat so I don't have to either dedicate one of three mouse buttons to it or move my hand off the mouse.

Thanks for the recommendation though! *hug*

Oops, didn't notice it was a left handed mouse. :) They have a right handed edition too (obviously). But whatever works! =3

=^_^= I figured they would, and it being left-handed wasn't what pushed my decision--it's the anecdotal evidence that the other mouse lasts for as long as my current one has, and is comfortable to use. More important than millisecond response time for my purposes. *huggles*

You on Bloodhoof? I am playing horde.

Nope, Feathermoon, but horde side. We've got a wonderful guild going called Wanderer. Furry-friendly, friendly overall atmosphere, and you can be as casual or hardcore as you please; we are planning to start regular raiding in January because we'd rather go in well-prepared than be like all the hardcore progression guilds trying to slam up against the bosses in quest blues from the very first week.
