To paint or not to paint the tummy

ENG

First of all I want to clarify one thing. I'm not a big fan of coloring the belly of mobian girls. I know it's a very popular custom among artists, but I avoid it as much as possible, since I try to be as faithful as possible to the original canon.

I understand the logic of painting the belly of some characters, but depending on its design, this can help to improve the appearance of the character or be totally unnecessary. Of course, this is subjective. This is art after all, there is creative freedom.

For example. In the case of Amy Rose, it's very common to see her with the chest of another color, and the argument used for this is the comparison with the Sonic belly, however, Shadow and Silver lack that characteristic, so the use of a different color on the belly is merely a matter of design, not logic.

Maybe it's because of the character's color or the color of her arms, but in Amy Rose's case, the different belly color works pretty well. I cannot say the same in cases like Blaze, Sticks, Tikal or even Vanilla. I consider that the painted belly in these characters is unnecessary and even detrimental to the design.

Right now I find myself in a dilemma regarding the color of the belly of some of my characters, as you will have seen in this pic: https://inkbunny.net/s/2125957

The idea was born after I started analyzing photographs of real gazelles. The white belly with a black stripe on the sides is, without a doubt, a very noticeable characteristic in these animals, and to omit it would be to take away its identity.

In short, when it comes to an OC, there is much more creative freedom when it comes to designing a character. The only limitation would be to maintain a common style. So I may want to continue doing some design experiments before defining the final look of my characters.

I know some people who would debate for HOURS what color Amy's belly is supposed to be, but the fact of the matter is there is only one instance where we actually see it in anything canonical, the beach episode of Sonic X, where she wears a swim suit that shows her midriff, revealing a pink belly the same color as the rest of her fur, I don't think she has any floof on her chest since her dresses have been very form fitting in the past, but that's all I can gather.  I can't even be sure if this is the way it was intended because Sonic X is known for the odd coloring error and cutting corners in animation, unless we get a game with Amy wearing a bikini or something we may never really know how she should look.

In the video games of the Olympics, we have been able to verify that Blaze's belly has the same color as the rest of her body. It's for this reason that I think the same thing happens with the rest of mobians girls, like Amy. The reason is because the female characters wear clothes and their design does not require more details in areas that are not visible. On the other hand, in male characters such as Sonic, Tails or Knuckles, it's necessary to put some detail on their bellies so as not to leave that space empty. In Knuckles' case, it does not have a painted belly, but instead has a white mark in his chest. In the case of Shadow and Silver, they both have fur on their chests. As I said before, belly color is more a matter of design than logic.

yes very true, although they have written lore around it to justify it, for example, Knuckles' chest swoosh is a birthmark that is inherited from his clan, that marks him as a guardian.  Also thanks for reminding me, I really got to get around to finishing Mario and Sonic at the Olympics, I got that game the day it came out and haven't really played much of it...

I imagine it's a case of personal choice. None of the canon mobian girls ever expose their midriffs in the games, so it's open to interpretation.

At the end of the day, it's your art, and you should enjoy doing it however you like :D

Blaze does it in the Olympics games. And those designs are from SEGA.

But I'm not trying to say that there is a rule. Each artist can design the character as they wish. You don't have to be faithful. It just needs to look and look good.

Ah, fair enough, I didn't know that she did.

But anyway, you're right. Personal taste.
