There are some good mods for that game. I did one playthrough with a race of sadists that had a syncretically evolved slave race of masochists. Unfortunately, it inevitably slows to a crawl in late game, seemingly regardless of how big you made the galaxy because of how much population simming it's doing. (which has led me to believe a better way to make games with large populations is to keep most of the pops inactive and randomly select a n-sized group each 'tick' to simulate)
