Alright, you know what? I'm not doing this! The more I try to write a backstory for the echidnas, the worse it gets! It's a f*cking nightmare trying to write a story for them.
Why do I say this? Because the expanded lore of the echidna race is so goddamn convoluted.
As the expanded lore gets deeper and deeper, I'm seeing more and more reason why Knuckles NEEDS to remain the last living echidna.
And when it's not the lore specifically, the echidnas themselves are portrayed as a race of assholes with over-inflated egos. Time and time again, their lust for power and need of control (or even implied incest) shows that they're doomed to run their selves into extinction.
Don't get me wrong though, I still hate Thrash the Tasmanian Devil. Even if his actions were due to "legal issues."
I know people were disappointed with how the "Endangered Species" arc turned out due to "legal issues." However, if Archie Comics were allowed to continue the echidna stories afterwards, I could easily imagine "Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood" being adapted into canon.
And please don't direct me to "Sonic Comics Online." Their fan adaptations make me cringe so much...
Also yes, I'm aware of what really happened with Archie Comics, but in order to keep people from getting upset (myself included), I'm going to keep referring to it as "legal issues."

Alright, the brief version is that there was a former writer who wrote for Archie Sonic Comics. His artwork was awful, his stories were criticized a lot, his plot devices were questionable, and the characters he made were either disliked or were OCs that look like redesigns of other characters.
Eventually, he left Archie Comic and his characters behind. The writers of Archie started making his characters more three-dimensional. He didn't like what Archie was doing with his characters and decided to sue Archie Comic and copyrighted his characters. He won the case and this caused some major rewrites in the current arcs at the time. With a lot of the characters suddenly unusable, Archie was in a tight bind.
However, they had the bright idea of rewriting reality in the Sonic series by doing a crossover event with their Mega Man series. This resulted in the Sonic comics being rebooted after the crossover. Thankfully, the stories in the Sonic comics were then more simplified and followed closer to the games.
