Alrighty here goes...

Sanic (2020)

So remember how I had to make a super short stream on Tuesday Feb 18th 2020?

The answer was simple, I was invited by co-workers to go watch Sanic.

I know a lot of peeps haven't gone to watch it, so I'll keep the spoilerific stuff out of this journal.

First of all, there's a reason it's being lauded as the "Best Movie Based on a Video Game to this day" it's a fresh new story, BUT it takes things from other Sonic lore and melds them into a nice little thing.

Yes they had to give it the Roger Rabbit/Movies with animated characters + Live Action Humans interacting treatment, to appeal to an even broader audience. It's a movie for everyone, for the fans who enjoyed the games in the 90ies, for the Parents who just want to take their kids to see a movie, and to the newer generation of Sanic fans, again it has a little bit for everyone.

Jim Carrey as Dr. Robotnik (damn fucking glad SEGA has once again decided to embrace the americanization of the character and melded both the Robotnik and Eggman names into the narrative)
He was a fresh new "take" on the character, to be honest, Robotnik/Eggman always changes from game to game, in certain little ways and aspects, so to the fans who grew up with the games, saw the cartoons in america, etc. We know what it is to have different versions of Dr. Robotnik, so again, this is only off putting to the little bitchfits who are trying to bitch about...pretty much very minor and unimportant things, It's called Pettifogging, look it up if you need to. So again, I enjoyed Jim as Robotnik/Eggman, and I'm glad he did the role.

The rumors of the old design being intentional to cause bad press are running around...if it is true then Paramount literally went to Las fucking Vegas and won the gamble of the century.

I remember when talk of a "Sonic Movie" as in live action, was ridiculed and brushed of as "It'll be a B movie, I'll be a fan project, etc, etc." 50M - 70M+ in it's opening weekend says otherwise. And before the so called expert bitchfaggots say "It'll never beat Zootopia / Disney movies"...sure you bitchfaces can say that, and yes Zootopia did make over 1B, BUT in it's opening Weekend in the US it only did $75M...Sanic did $58M over three days, and $70M over 4 days...so for a film from Paramount, that's a pretty fucking thing, AND it beat fucking Detective Pikachu...so nyeh...

In the end, it's a really really good movie worth watching by yourself, with friends, or family. Anyone who says otherwise is a subhuman DC trashbag trying to defend their flop. (Birds of Prey...err I mean...lol Harley Quinn's Birds of Prey...funny story about the name change mid release...) Hell even CWC, EVEN WITH BLUE FUCKING ARMS, said it was a good movie.

I've loved Sanic since first playing in 1991, and have been through the ride for a long long time, and I can say as a loving fan, thank you SEGA, thank you Paramount, thank you Papa Hesse, for giving us the Sonic movie we needed and deserved.

First they tried to slander the movie before the release and praising the woke cancer bird of prey
Then the Bird of prey blamed it for their shitty fail at the box office THEN the blame the new virus
And all just because Paramount and the director LISTENED to the fans!

I remember reading about that.

Almost all of those Twitter posts was 1 of 2 things. Either they went to see the Sonic movie with their boyfriend/girlfriend or their husband and kids. But in every one of them they were surprised about how "sexist" and "racist" the movie was and walked out, most of the time the kids were crying too, then they saw that Bird of Prey was showing in the theatre and wayched that instead. And they all felt so secure and happy.....

The most stupid thing with those Twitter messages was that they were posted on the 12th and 13th, the Sonic movie was not released before the 14th.....

There has been some behind the scenes photos and videos showing it wasnt a marketing stunt and was actually changed for the good, sadly the studio is no longer here at least the movie was nice.
Aval0nX

the studio? It's being managed by several production companies, and with how well it's going it's going to have a sequel.

A studio that made the Sanic's redesign.
After making it, it got closed.
Cuz their parent company "wanted to open new studip in a more profitable place", so they fired whole artistic crew.

Yes exactly

there's no way it was intentional bad marketing, you do not make entire mcdonalds toys and posters just for a memey PR stunt
Aval0nX

" "you don't make mcdonalds toys...

who the fuck knows, maybe it WAS all part of the fucking plan, if so, gamble of the fucking century.

there's also the fact that the one scene where they couldn't get a bomb off of sonic's glove which was clearly written back when he had disgusting white hands because they never even suggest the idea for him to takeo ff his gloves

I'm glad you liked the movie. It looks like a good movie, and no shame on you for seeing or enjoying it. I however will not be seeing it because I believe the treatment of the people who made it is abhorrent and not to be supported. The fact that this movie made so much money is disgusting to me. A team of obviously talented animators made a whole movie, which looked hideous due to poor management and art direction decisions, then were forced to work overtime in a massive crunch to redo the entire thing, and lost their jobs for the privilege. Fuck that.

Almost none of that is factual, though. Yes, the animation studio location was shut down, but it was by its parent company for completely unrelated financial and contractual reasons. They're a contracted out of house company that Paramount has no stake in. Also, while I'm sure at least a few people working there lost their jobs in the restructuring, there's a new studio opening in a less expensive to operate out of city that many of the staff will likely be transferring to. ...Even the rumors of workload crunch for this particular project are said to possibly only be speculation. I think maybe Canadian labor laws are stricter about that kind of thing, which pessimistically may be another factor in closing down the location.

There are a few conflicting articles about it. Some of them contain unverified sources claiming to be people who worked on it saying there were 10-17+ hour days for weeks with no breaks, others say that the delay of release date was specifically to avoid crunch. Both could be true. We do know that the estimated budget of $35mil was incorrect - it cost around 5. And the VFX studio did shut down, causing a lot of people to either relocate or find other work. The reason that's an issue is because it's pretty common; a lot of VFX and videogame studios have had to shut down after forcing their employees to do a ton of extra work (often unpaid OT) so the sensitivity to this sort of thing is heightened, and I think that's a good thing.

One thing that I resent about people criticizing videogame-based movies is the idea that they should be exact retellings of the game- I disagree with that argument, I feel that a good VG-based movie should be original while still maintaining the themes, spirit, and references to the game. Netflix's Castlevania is a perfect example of this melding of taking an old story and taking it in a new narrative direction, and it works.

At the same time, a VG-based film shouldn't stray so far from the source as to become unrecognizable save for the characters and references; violations to this include the old Super Mario Brothers movie (which I still enjoyed, it just wasn't Super Mario), and the Resident Evil film series (seriously, fuck that garbage).

I have two movie ticket vouchers, I may have to go see Sonic. ^_^ It sounds like it struck the best balance between originality and lore-respect.

In a certain, magnificently awful way, I would view Our Host as one of the more authoritative references to anything Sanic. if Aval0nX signs off on this movie, folks should consider it their green light.

Bonus multiplier: "pettifogging". Yes, it's real and no, it's not someone fetish.

Everything is someone's fetish. This one is the kind of fetish a lawyer or law maker would have.

I saw the movie on Valentine's Day and it was a love letter to the fans. Ultimately though I'm glad he was the one movie I got to see before this whole lock down fiasco happened
