Chucky

Television.....

by
.....sucks swinging hairy balls. I'm sitting in a hotel in Atlanta, GA and did my vary rare power-on of the TV remote. Even with half a dozen movie channels, TV still proves itself useless and uninteresting. I'd rather listen to Pandora or YouTube and all their shitty adds than watch television. TV sucks and I wish all the networks would die in flames. Fuck news, fuck sports, fuck all the commercials that chased me away form television in the first place. Despite the super HD whatever screen I'm looking at, it's still the same brainless 'buy our shit' television.

There's a reason I haven't had cable or watched broadcast tv in almost 20 years.

Ditto, almost. Last cable bill I paid was in 2003.

From where I am: ABC, ABC2, ABC kids, ABC Me and ABC News (all Australian TV channels) have no ads.

You are fortunate then. American TV represents the ultimate consumerist society with advertisement after advertisement in any TV show. It has been this way since I was a kid in the 1980s.

I grew up watching tv with no way to watch what i want other than to be there at the specific time the shows i liked were on. However in todays world, I say screw cablle or satellite unless there's no other choice. I prefer just plain ol' internet connection to stream Netflix, Vudu, or Amazon. Between all hree of those, I have plenty of movies I enjoy, television shows from my past that I can now re-watch once again and perhaps see EVERY episode finally, and shows that I'vce heard about through internet browsing that might interest me.  And on the bright side....I can watch what I want, when I want. At home, work, or visiting someone.

I had TV growing up, but I've never owned one of my own.  It is all brainless crap.  I'd rather be writing my stories for you guys than letting that gobbledygook melt my few remaining brain cells.

That's been part of it too. Once I started seriously drawing, I lost a lot of interest in side entertainment.

Hubby and I also ditched TV back in the day when Discover was truly about discovering something new, and back when Food was about learning how to craft up something tasty, or likewise, when History actually talked about historical stuff!

Not this... Mountain-Swamp-Gold Digging-Alaskan Wilderness Surviving-Ice Road Truckers in Bolivia kind of bull schiesses that's going on today that is practically just there to be filler between commercial after commercial of stuff neither hubby or I are interested in.

Gimme YouTube and DailyMotion!
And maybe some CrunchyRoll and Funimation on the side, but no thanks for TV as it is today... Today's TV is weak sauce...

I used to love History documentaries until they turned into the opposite of History, now it's all about aliens built the pyramids and Hitler is still alive in a basement somewhere.

The Fiction Channel where everything is BSed up and nobody gives a hoot about real History anymore...
A damn shame... 😑

The only thing I use the TV for is old movies and reruns of Star Trek.

There are a few rare gems that are worth watching.
Have you seen "The Expanse" series?
(well, not exactly TV, I get in in my Amazon tablet)
Chucky

I'll have to look into The Expanse. I think my wife has an Amazon Prime account, I could probably use that.

The Expanse is really good. Probably my favorite scifi since Firefly.
Chucky

Firefly was pretty badass.
ThaPig

The Expanse is a little like Firefly in the sense they are kind of fugitives with diverse backgrounds running around in a patched-up ship. But it's little more grounded in reality, when it comes to the science part. For example, the planets they visit don't have an Earth-like atmosphere or gravity and even with their futuristic engines trips between planets can take months.

That would be refreshing.

I’ve gotten in the habit of bringing my laptop and an HDMI cable so I can watch streaming stuff if need be.
Chucky

I should start bringing an HDMI cable since most hotel TVs are compatible now.

Same as the person above. I take a thin Ultrabook laptop and HDMI cord. Or a firestick. But yeah screw it I'll watch Netflix or other stuff with my ad blocker.

The only TV I watch is old stuff, and only when I've recorded it so I can skip the commercials.

Haven't watched TV in years I think. Only online ^^

Well, yeah......
Seriously, I'm never without my laptop and/or tablet, or phone, so not a big issue.
On the TV front, two redeeming networks; A&E, with it's non stop reality cop shows (Arts&Entertainment, really?) and the new Motor Trend TV, Good news; auto shows 24/7. Bad news, they're all reality shows, and they killed off a bunch of great magazines in the process.
Chucky

I guess people love reality shows otherwise they wouldn't have taken over. I can't stand 'em personally.

I'm usually on YouTube, with the TV as background noise. Lots of great auto content, and generally interesting stuff. Want to know what drinking 50 beers a day can do to the human body? Check out Chubbyemu, for this and other medical anomalies

Youtube is my 'go-to' as well. I listen to a lot of podcasts, stand-ups, and lots of music. Anything I can have going and listen to while I'm in Photoshop.

Have you listened to Zenia's podcasts? She's really good!
YouTube rules! Especially for us amatuer mechanics who need to be walked through repair/maintenance procedures. Looked for an oil change video for a 2019 Miata, and there it was.

I've often thought that cartoons tended to be the most intelligent stuff on TV when I lost interest in it years ago.  Plus, broadcast reception is lousy here, even in town.
Chucky
4 years, 2 months ago
I felt that way too. But so little holds my interest anymore.

I strayed from television since I graduated from high school.

I have it on just for noise but mostly on cooking, weather and animal documentary shows mostly.
