To anyone who plays or has played dungeons and dragons

by
So I've been getting into dnd a little lately. Mostly listening to campaigns events, horror stories, a couple full campaigns, things like that. I wanted to try out making a character for it, but I'm not entirely sure where to start, especially with the stats. Does anyone have any tips or advice on how to go about this?

I should mention that this character would most likely never see a game. I'm just doing this for fun.

sure i play and dm sometimes

grab 4 d6 roll em    write down the  total of the highest 3
do that 7 times        discard the lowest number

my group re rolles  1s and 2s

and for a first charter  i suggest going with a non magical charter  as  those are  harder to make and play

next step  figure out  what   race and class you want to play as

put  the numbers from earlier into  the   stats  of  the  charter   putting the highest in what the  charter focuses on

example   a  rouge  needs hi  dex  but doesn't really use strength much in the current edition

also pick a background for  some bonus proficiencies

for more help id need more info on the charter

there is also a  charter builder  on dndbeyond.com     that is really useful   for the  basic  builds

Thanks, this helps a ton. I had finalized the character's background, class, race, and everything else beforehand, but was completely stuck on the stats. Had heard somewhere else to just put in the stats manually based on what you thought they'd be for their background. Just did the 4d6 method and the results were actually higher than the stats I originally put down.

I'm using 5e rules, yeah. And I'm not exactly playing anything. Wouldn't know where to go to find a group, anyway. Not to mention my work schedule isn't conducive to setting up sessions. I'm just making this character for fun. Also looking into Unearthed Arcana for subclass and a homebrew cantrip.

Do you have the 5e guild book? In the character creation section it will say in the quick builds what Stats you should keep the highest for character, like a Ranger (Dex then Wisdom). I think D&D website has those characters available and also a few more that aren't in that book. There is also a Monster Book with character stats for some creates like Orcs, Goblins, etc if you want to play as the baddies^^

I don't have the physical guide book, but I do have access to dnd beyond, which is where I've been looking through race and class traits. I had settled on a psychic fighter tiefling. The subclass kind of messes with their backstory of already having the psychic abilities, but I can work around that. My main issue roadblock had been stat numbers. At first I just decided to put numbers in on my own, then the advice above suggested another method, which then gave me numbers way higher than the ones I had before.

I kind of forgot about the quick build advice for fighter. The 4d6 rolls gave me an 18, three 15's, and two 12's.Stuck the 18 on intelligence, the 15's on strength, dexterity and constitution, and the 12's on charisma and wisdom.

wow those are amazing rolls... thou if you're building a Fighter... best to put the 18 to strength^^ If you're doing a Eldritch Knight with magic... still best to put Strength first as you can always boost your Intelligence in later levels (You really only get spells at lvl 3 and not much meaning you get more effective at higher levels) meaning melee is still your bread and butter^^

I'll say you got a good build for the physical plane and if you go Monk, I suggest focusing on how you develop and be aware of what your party might need.  If you got a good dex then have fun watching your DM try to swear at missing you.

I mean, I run mentor sessions to teach people how to play D&D, role play, improve, and problem solve. As well as team building. I wouldn't mind helping you out with anything if you want to learn.

Also never listen to people who tell you to min/max, build a character you'll have fun with. Most DMs prefer flavor over power.

I'd appreciate some pointers. The character is pretty much done now, and like I said before, I'm just making it for fun. But it wouldn't hurt to learn how stuff works.
