those quirky obsessions from days gone by

by
I used to get crushes on the oddest things. I remember when I was 13, playing Legend of Zelda: a link to the past, there was this gargoyle statue in the thieve's town of the dark world. This huge muscular (possibly naked)  stone gargoyle clutching a pitchfork.

Combine this with Disney's Gargoyles being on TV at the same time. I just...mmm..wow. I loved the idea of 'evil' creatures like that. Something dark, unknown, wild, and fun. Having a hair-trigger libido made it so easy to get interested in such things ^^
Then there was DarkStalkers at the arcade, yup that sexy cat girl got me ^^. Then Primal Rage, a fighting game where dinosaurs rip each other apart while small humans look on in fear or awe.

When I grew up, there was no internet really, didn't even have access to a computer regularly till i was 19. So, I watched TV a lot, get absorbed in all these different things, and wonder about the lives of fictional characters. I'm not putting this behavior down of course. Life can really suck badly and we all need a break sometimes. Some of my best memories from that time are acting dumb with my friend, playing video games, and *ahem* having fun by myself XD. Being able to put a huge chunk of your interest in another world...another place, other people...really takes the edge off playing that BS fitting in game. I got so pissed playing Fatal Fury 2 at this convenient store around the corner. I'd show up nearly every day with a pocket full of quarters ready to beat the shit out of Terry and Big Bear.

At 13 I also fell in love with cooking ...and the lion king ^^ I also happened to finally take an art class with a teacher that actually gave a damn.  It's crazy when I think about how many things just clicked for me that one year. So much happened, so much mattered. I was broke most of the time (duh) and didn't have a job....but everything mattered a lot and I felt good about myself.  It was a different world I lived in. I think back about that, what I liked...and surprise...I still like most of them. Then I think about this furry thing...babyfurs....cubbing out, and I think that's everybody else trying to get back to their 'ideal time' too.   Maybe that ideal time is just everything working out at the same time for you :)

Hmm...don't suppose you guys would mind if I ventured into darker territory with my art? I know I draw cute things a lot but I might need a change of subjects soon. I don't usually draw lizards, gargoyles, or dinos, but I'd like to sometime. Gah, I started playing a link to the past again tonight...and all these memories just flooded back to me ^////^

I think that's everybody else trying to get back to their 'ideal time' too ... It's a mix of that and pure nostalgia. Things look golden and wonderful when looking back 20 years or more -- we remember the wonderful things we loved and think about how simple life was when all we had to worry about was math homework and schoolyard bullies. Escaping to that one way or another is tempting ;)

Yeah ^.^ It really is. I had a bunch of bad things happen too around that time, but I guess those things don't seem as relevant now as the good times I had :) A simple life is a good life ^^

Trust me, I was often a deeply depressed and troubled little kid, and when I talk about bullying, it was a major problem for me. But somehow, what I remember most now are the good things that are fun to return to one way or another :3

Lol, an interesting read ^_^
As far as 'darker subjects', it's good to have some variety in what you draw =P
Oh, and go nostalgia bomb, go! Ahh, so many wonderful cartoons and games and things ... ^_^

What ever you draw, I'm sure there will be fans for it.  Furries are a pretty diverse lot :)

You're right. That's one thing I love about this fandom! Furries seem way more open to things than the common folk :)

I'd love to see darker themes portrayed in your style. It's a guilty pleasure of mine to find the worst things possible on sites like IB and FA. :) ...among the rest of the internet. Depending on the subject matter, however, I sometimes take a break from such perusing because it will at times make me feel sick to myself. But alas, my curiosity will never be sated!

Thanks ^.^ I know what you mean about taking a break from such things. It can make me feel emotionally numb and dead inside depending on the material. I rather like ideas about corruption and transformation though. And darker things XD. Trouble is, when I go looking for those in other ppl's art, it's not really satisfying in the end. Or maybe it's not balanced out by other decent emotions. It's like they just keep going and going in the direction of that one thing they do and don't explore anything else. So the art just becomes something about "ooh it's sick...it's bad..it's really bad...hey look how bad it is".  I just don't want my art to become something I sometimes avoid like that.

Reading this just made me feel nostalgic. =P
And I wouldn't mind seeing some darker artwork from you, it'd be interesting to see how you'd handle the subject. =3
