What sounds better

Using anthropomorphic animal characters
A simi serious story where the characters fight over a box to make a wish?
Or a complete non sense comedy, where the characters are in high school as students?
I'm trying to go back to writing, but I've been torn on the universe I wanted to create. Regardless of the story, my hyena is going to fuck anything with a pussy. He'll just be much worst of a person in the comedy.

Put your character in the world he's best suited for and a plot that you know you can keep up on and will enjoy working with.

Once you do that you'll find that your story will start writing itself as the character starts developing a personality of his own and begins doing things.

I've got eight books under my belt and at this point in time I feel more like I'm simply watching and recording what the characters are up to rather than making up the plot myself.

Perfect case in point - in the last one the protagonist was going to go rogue and drag his sensible sidekick down with him but he ended up realizing it was a bad idea and the sensible sidekick was the one who went rogue instead - totally screwed the plot outline I had in my head.

Are you looking to write a short story that's just a few pages or something that could be considered to be book length?

Do you have any delusions of ever getting the thing published?

If you're hoping to do something that's book length then you'll need to do world building, even if you're simply using our world and just making everyone into furries.

You needn't provide a history of the dawn of civilization, instead, simply toss in random facts here and there to flesh things out - ie/I need to wear a condom with this wolf girl since our genes are close enough but I can bare back the cat girl since it's impossible for us to have kids and vixens are easy to hook up with since half of male foxes are gay for some reason.

Think about how being a fur is going to shape how the characters interact with their world - if you take a shower then don't forget that if you immediately hop out of it into bed for more sex then the two of you are going to leave a few gallons of water on the floor and totally soak the bed.

Humans get their fingers caught in doors but furs can get their tails and ears hurt like that.

Since anthro hands will have fur/pads on them then perhaps paper money was never developed and currency is coin based as a coin would be easier for a fur to handle.

Instead of Hitler killing the Jews maybe he tried to kill all of the ferrets instead and therefore they're a lot more rare in your world.

Tossing in little asides like that as your character interacts with the world and the different species fleshes it out while avoiding the trap of devoting the first chapter to a data dump of "in the beginning, God created furries..."

Believe it or not, but figuring out that sort of stuff will actually help you with your plot filler as it allows your character to "explore" his world for the reader in between sexual encounters.

I'm going for book size as I'm planing to get the story's published.
I'm definitely mapping things out as I go along, which is why I been looking around for as many artists I could find to do reference sheets. I got 12 females already, but only 4 males have sheets so far since I brought 11 out of 12 of my girls, but I'm trying to make all my males original creations which take longer.
I do feel comedy at times is the best place to go, because there I get to push buttons and my hyena doesnt have to restrain his asshole/trouble making ways.

In that case then I recommend publishing it through Amazon as the service is free and there's no bullshit involved.

Most publishers won't accept your book if you don't have an agent submit it to them and agents charge up front fees with no assurance of getting you a deal - in other word, you're throwing your money away.

You can self-publish but even print on demand is expensive - cheaper to simply get author copies from Amazon that you can give away or sell to people.

Unless you intend to include them in the book then they aren't really necessary - just include a description in the story.

"Cigarskunk was a tall skunk at six foot four who always seemed to be puffing away on a Honduran cigar.  I wouldn't describe his build as athletic, but he was fit and carried himself with confidence.  His facial markings actually looked more akin to those of a badger and he sported a single black line parting the white stripe down his back to the tip of his tail.  Looking at his attire, he clearly valued function over form, donning a pair of well-worn jeans and a tee shirt with a ranger-style vest over it, the only exception being his footwear, a well polished pair of black cowboy boots."

See - now you can picture the character in your mind and even have a slight idea as to his personality and demeanor without the need for investing in a character sheet for him.

So that just leaves the theme to go with it - action, adventure, daily life, etc.

You mentioned high school - word of warning as that means characters in the 14-18 range and the majority of publishers won't touch that sort of material.  I'd suggest college instead if you want a school setting.

Thank you for the tips and advice.
