Well! So much for Confuzzled...

by
Yup, I'm back home. But not from the convention; I missed it! And it was so silly, too...

So we were slated to get to England last week Thursday the 23rd. My girlfriend was coming over from the US, she'd arrive in the morning on Thursday, I'd meet her at the airport and we'd both go to the gate from where our flight to Bristol would leave - then in Bristol we'd be picked up by

, spend a night at a local Premier Inn and calmly drive over to Birmingham to get to Confuzzled on Friday the 24th.

Well, my girlfriend had to fly from a small airport near where she lives, to Washington, from there to Copenhagen, and from there to Amsterdam where I would meet her and we'd travel further on to Bristol. Her flight even left a day earlier due to the very long traveling time and the time difference, and she managed to message me once she had gotten to the Washington airport - to tell me her flight to Copenhagen was delayed by 5 hours due to technical problems with the plane. We calculated that if the 5 hour delay would work through all her connecting flights, and they'd retain the one hour layover in Copenhagen, she would arrive at Schiphol airport in Amsterdam around 2PM-ish local time. That still left us enough time to catch our flight to Bristol which would leave at 4:40PM.

So, 1PM came and went, it turned 2PM, 3PM, 4PM... I was gradually getting more nervous while checking the arrivals from each flight that came in from Copenhagen and not seeing my girlfriend appear. I had promised her I would not get onto the Bristol flight or in any other way leave the airport until I would have her right there next to me, so I kept waiting. And waiting. And waiting.

5PM. 6PM, 7PM, 8PM, 9PM... and still no sign of her. By that time I was getting desperate and so very, very worried! What the heck could have happened? Was my poor girlfriend stranded at a strange airport in Copenhagen, with no one around she knew, all by herself on her first big international travel, with no way to get out? I was eating myself with worry!

Finally, a bit after 10PM, two airport officials came up to me to ask me if I was me, and they told me that on the other side of the airport, in the Departures section, my girlfriend had arrived at about 4:45PM and was waiting there for me to meet her, while I was waiting on the other side of the wall in the Arrivals hall to meet her. She was super scared and just about desperate as well, they had been looking for me all over in that section of the airport, and they were ready to fix a hotel room for her, but did a last ditch effort to find me and decided to also check the Arrivals section where they finally found me and they managed to bring us together.

Whew! Talk about a weight lifted off our shoulders! But of course, we had totally missed our flight to Bristol, the service desk was already closed so we could not re-book our flight, and after all those hours of fear and worry and waiting we were SO done and just wanted to get away from there and get to a calm and quiet place to rest and recuperate from the ordeal.

I had already arranged with my mother that we'd spend a night or two at her place since my girlfriend's return trip was only this Friday, so I called my mother and told her we were finally together and we were on our way home. We caught a train to Utrecht Central station and managed to catch one of the last buses to the town where I live, and finally made it to my mother's place a bit after 1AM.

We realized that there would be no way we'd get back to the airport the next day to re-book our flight to Bristol at a decent time, and then have to see which flight they could put us on, and then try to get in touch with

to let him know of our new arrival time, and then cannonball all the way to Birmingham to get to Confuzzled. So we had to make the decision to miss the convention and spend the week at my mother's place instead.

So! Instead of going around Confuzzled looking at all the awesome stuff and wonderful and funny fursuiters and whatnot, we had a week of sleeping in late, look around my old little town a bit, and play Stardew Valley on her Switch. And while that was not the fun of Confuzzled, it still was a pretty darn awesome time because we did get to spend all our time together - it's been five years since we last had actually been together.

I've dropped her off at Schiphol airport today for her flight back home, and at least so far it seems to have gone smoothly; her return flight takes her via Copenhagen to Chicago and then to the small airport near where she lives, and once she is at Chicago she'll be able to use her phone again and message me so I will know more about the rest of her flights home by then; she's expected to arrive at her home airport at about midnight local time tomorrow.

So yeah! That happened! It was a major mess-up, and we missed the convention, but we still did have a really nice time together. Ah well, at least we know now what to do and what not to do for the next time should there be a next time, and I suppose at least it makes for quite a travel story.

Heh, thanks. Yeah, it did rather suck, but the silver lining was that I got to spend the whole week with my girlfriend, and we got a quite solid plan for me going over to visit her for an extended time out of it as well >^_^<

It certainly is, hee *chuckles* And yeah, she lives in America and I live all the way over here in the Netherlands, so we have, for ten years already, a long distance relationship. And we do aim to eventually fix that >^_^<
