So the makers of the Sonic movie announced a new release date, February 14th 2020. So that means the animators have an extra 3 months to re-do Sonic's effects. Now I'm pretty certain that filming for this movie was finished quite some time ago so all that's left is post work, but I suppose it wasn't as simple a job as re-skinning Sonic with whatever new model they make. That does make sense I suppose, even if the animation asset was basically a pre-done thing that you could drag and drop a new skin on they would have to make all new facial animations to work with the proportions of the new face because that is VERY easy to mess up and fall into the uncanny valley. Besides I think the "drag and drop" thing would work okay if it was animation for the games (like the Avatar from Forces) or even TV, but it would be pretty noticeable on a giant movie screen. On the plus side it looks like they remembered to give Sonic gloves https://www.deviantart.com/wakeangel2001/art/D7VzS0FUwA... so that's something. Still got the blue arms though...
yeah, at this point the way Sonic looks is the only thing they CAN change. I also think relatively minor tweaks are all the design needs, slightly less muscle definition so he doesn't look like Rocket, bigger eyes, gloves instead of white hands (which seems to have already been addressed based on the preview) and shoes that don't have shoelaces. I'm actually hoping they don't make him look TOO much like his game model, because that would create a live action Woody Woodpecker situation where we have a cartoon character floating around pretending to be part of the real world.

I doubt any of Sonic's friends will be in the movie, from what we've seen in the trailer it looks like Sonic is going to be by himself in our world, though there's a chance we might get at least a cameo if there are scenes in Sonic's world (though the only hint that that would happen are the giant mushrooms in the last scene of the trailer.)
