Fucking thieves!

I discovered one of my bicycles got stolen when I went to get my working bike unlocked so I can go bike a few miles today for my daily exercise. So now I am waiting on the police to get here so I can file a report and to bertermine if it will be worth filing a claim with my insurance to get the bike replaced.

As for the other bike, it is unridable until it gets a complete rebuild as some components are rusted to the point of seizure. The bike needs new tires, rims, brakes, cables, derailleurs, cables pedals, crankshaft and other work before I can start riding it.

The bad thing is that due to me filing bankruptcy getting the non-working bike fixed or the stolen bike replaced may not be allowed.

I need the bikes for both my exercise and weightloss regimines.

that is why I am debating filing a claim as the bike cost about $300.00 plus accessories

I have renter's insurance and am checking to see if it will be worth filing a claim
Otlan

If it's covered under that, then there's no reason not to file one. What's the worst they can do? Say no?
Ainoko

it depends on how much the deductible is compared to the cost of the bike.

Well, the Bike is $300, how much is your deductible?
Ainoko

I've had as many bikes (and individual tires) stolen as I've wrecked in car accidents. I feel your pain. *hugs*

Well damn... Who'd steal a bike anyway? I mean, they're not that expensive, are they? Of course, it's been ages since I've ever looked at a bike, so how would I know if they're still under 500 bucks or not? >.<

there are those that will steal anything that isn't nailed down. some that even being nailed down wouldn't matter..  As to value for some it didn't cost them anything so getting even $5.00 for it is something maybe they wanted a fix

hope you get it worked out soon

Yeah, it soudln't surprise me that some people will just steal anything... :/

It all depends on the bike, but the durable ones that will actually withstand the rigours of an exercise regimen tend to be at least $300 if you don't mind a hardtail and no front shocks, and $800+ for a decent midrange dually (aka "soft tail") that isn't going to bottom out heavily with each stroke of the pedals.

If it's a competition cross-country bike (aka XC), they can easily reach $2k+, and downhill racing bikes that will let you survive the drops (assuming you stay right side up) are easily $4k+ due to dual fork suspension, and 6-8" (or more) of travel on each end.

I won't comment on the velodrome or road racing bikes, because those get even more stupidly expensive, especially velo bikes.

EDIT: Examples of just how expensive some XC bikes can be: https://www.specialized.com/us/en/shop/bikes/mountain-b...

EDIT the second: Even a "basic" and "entry level" bike for competition isn't cheap: https://www.specialized.com/us/en/mens-rockhopper/p/154... ($560 USD for a Specialized Rockhopper).  This is just one brand, there are plenty of others out there (GT, Giant, etc)

I probably should've guessed more professional-quality bikes would be more expensive.

Well, the works bikes that are $11k are ones that pretty much only a select few will purchase every year - most bikes shops won't even carry such, because those bikes are usually ones only those who are absolutely dedicated to racing will pick up.  They sure are gorgeous though.  Yeaaaars ago (almost 20 years ago) I wanted Specialized's Rockhopper World Tour series variant, but at $4,500 CAD I was all "nope, nope nope nope".

$5-700 usually seems to be the tipping point where you're getting a lot of the good features alongside a frame that can handle years (or decades) of solid use and abuse, but aren't putting money in for a bunch of features that don't have as much of a return for your money (stuff like fancier cog sets, high end deraileurs, shocks with more features or travel, hydraulic disc brakes, etc).  But yeah, any of the well known or established brands is going to have somewhat of a higher cost to them, but the upside is there's usually less maintenance involved with them.

Ugh, that sucks - when it rains it pours it seems.

So what sort of security did you have on it and how much effort did it take the thief to liberate it?

Had both bikes chained to my patio with a Kryptonite lock, as to how much effort, I have no idea.

And since I filed bankruptcy, getting the stolen bike replaced or the remaining bike repaired can be problematic, not to mention I am raising hell with my insurance provider over the agent who set up my policies failed to include my renter's insurance which means I am violating my lease for not having renter's insurance.

Problem comes down to deductible - if it's a $500 deductible and it's a $450 bike...

For security - ok, chain - I'm assuming actual chain and not steel cable - did the thief go through the chain, the lock, the patio or part of the bike?

If you still have the packages and receipts you might be able to file a claim with the maker depending on what part of the security system failed as a buddy up north lost his bike so someone cutting through the cable back in the 90s and got a check for $200 from the maker when he sent them the police report and what was left of the cable.
