Pika pika pikachu pika kachu chu! o.o
...Okay, okay, fine, I'll talk in English. Detective Pikachu is the latest offering from Nintendo, and the first movie based on a Nintendo video game since... well... Super Mario Bros The Movie. Nintendo was so traumatized by that film that they refused to license ANY of their projects for movies in the 26 years since it was released. TWENTY SIX YEARS since the last Nintendo movie.
Annnnnnnnd... Detective Pikachu is....
...Okay. Not bad. Decent. Not spectacular. Won't change the world. But if this a sign of Nintendo untightening its collective sphincter just a little, I foresee good things in the future. Legend of Zelda movie anyone? PLEEEEEEEEZ?
Honestly, this is a quickie review because I have SO little to say about it. The CGI is spectacular, ESPECIALLY on Pikachu. Ryan Reynold's voice acting is funny, but sadly not Deadpool funny; though he has a few zingers here and there. The writing and plot... are lacking. For a movie about a Detective, there's surprisingly little mystery. I predicted most of the movie's big twists WELL in advance, and the movie's biggest twist when I saw one of the trailers before even entering the theater.
But honestly? Easily one of the best, if not THE best video game movie ever made.
Skye's Final Verdict - Pokemon: Detective Pikachu - C+. Perfectly decent, but nothing else that makes it stand out, sadly.
