43 years ago; it's about 9 PM; Mario Garlatti, a young guy from Udine (Italy), is in his room and is recording "Wish you were here" by Pink Floyd from vinyl to cassette. For his 18 years he received as a gift a portable cassette player with a built-in microphone, which he is currently testing...and just as he's recording "Shine on you crazy diamond "something unexpected happens...
21:00.12; the house suddenly shakes and electricity goes off...minutes that seem endless. The recorder is dotated of batteries and continues to record the screams and the terror of the inhabitants of the house...but above all, the sound of the skipping vinyl, the wand that beats at the rhythm of the shock...and that dull roar of the earthquake.
The Friuli earthquake will be remembered as one of the most disastrous in Italy:
-Areas affected: 5,500 square kilometers -Population affected: 600.000 inhabitants -Deads: 990 -Displaced persons: more than 100.000 -Houses destroyed: 18,000 -Damaged houses: 75,000 -Damage to the territory: 4.500 billion Lire (over 18.5 billion Euros in 2010) -Municipalities involved: 45 municipalities “razed to the ground” such as Gemona, Venzone, Forgaria in Friuli, Buia, Pinzano al Tagliamento, Monteaperta (fraction of Taipana) and Osoppo, 40 “seriously damaged” and 52 “damaged”: all between Udine and Pordenone, plus just three municipalities in the province of Gorizia
