Well, it's been a while, but here are my thoughts on the Sonic Movie, the trailer, and everything's that's happened so far...
First off, hearing everything about the movie: who's starring in it, the plot, basically everything before the trailer was seen. My thing is, it's nice to hear about it, but I can't make judgements until I see the trailer and everything in action for myself. The more I heard about the news about the movie, the more I was like, "When Is The Trailer Going To Show?!"
And then, this past week... They showed it.
Now, I won't lie to you... When I saw it... I felt more hype circulating throughout my body than past game announcements. The performances were impressive, making me think we'll see something of an origin tale, pitting Sonic & Eggman/Robotnik against one another for the first time. I like Jim Carrey's version of the Doc as it seems (especially with that quick bit at the end of said trailer) it'll be a slow descent into seeing him as the Eggman/Robotnik we all know and... well, love is a bit of a stretch, caused by the obsession over ol' Blue.
And, of course... the design. Now, this may shock you... but I had no problem with the design. It still looked like Sonic and Ben Schwartz's performance definitely brings the attitude I'm familiar with. I found myself laughing and thinking, "Oh, yeah. That is so Sonic right there." Maybe that's why I wasn't butt hurt over the design. I mean, design changes never bothered me in the past, why would this time be any different? As long as Sonic behaved like Sonic, that's all that matters to me. If they made Sonic act like Shadow or Knuckles, then we'd have problems.
Design changes are not a bad thing. If anything, they show the evolution of the character, showing longevity. I, for one, appreciate stuff like this. Look at the likes of Scooby-Doo, Batman, the Looney Tunes. Shoot, even My Little Pony, for crying out loud... You'd think if they kept the designs of the ponies the same, FIM would be as popular as it is now? Even the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, who, let's be real, have had some questionable design changes themselves... *coughs* Michael Bay *coughs*
Bottom line, sometimes the appearance isn't everything, as long as the spirit of the character, what makes the character unique, remains. Course, it doesn't matter anyway, as it was announced that they would make changes to the character model for the Sonic Movie. While I commend Paramount for this unique approach, I have concerns that this may end up delaying the movie. And, of course, there are fans who have shown that the current look of Sonic can be adapted into the movie, the problem I see here is that Paramount is trying to please a fanbase who are known for being divided, yet dedicated. It's like the old saying goes: "Try and please everyone and you'll only end up not pleasing anyone."
I only hope things will work out and the movie will be shown in November as planned. The future is never truly guaranteed... I just hope that I'll still be alive, God willing, to see the Sonic Movie when it launches.
In the meantime... What do you think the chances are that there will be an altered version of Gangsta's Paradise for the Sonic Movie? I'm thinking something along the line of Speedster's Paradise. =D
