What did people use to lubricate anal sex before 1850?

Petroleum jelly wasn’t invented until the 1850s. Vegetable shortening and K-Y jelly weren’t invented until the 20th century.

But people have been doing anal intercourse since at least classical Greece (you’ll see references to it in works contemporaneous with Plato) and probably earlier (like around the time of Moses).

Given the sexual behavior of human beings (we’ll stick a penis into anything that doesn’t fight back or run away too fast), I’m sure people have been doing it since before talking was invented.

Unlubricated anal sex seems likely to be painful for the recipient and probably not much fun for the inserter. So what did do you think people used before all these modern products?

There have always been all kinds of oils around for cooking and burning i'm sure they probably used one of those.

Spit doesn't seem like it would last long enough. Although I remember one girl who hawked up a loogie and used _that_ as lube for interfemoral (no penetration). But I didn't last very long back then (20ish). Animal fat seems reasonable: chicken fat is a slightly goopy liquid at room temperature. Cooking oils would be messy, but, well, if the alternative is not getting laid...

Btw, this is idle curiosity plus "deep background" for a story. In "To Be A Star", a squirrel is trying out for the starring role in a snuff Western. The movie's plot includes anal sex. Now, this being a modern Hollywood-style movie set, they'll be using a water-based lubricant. But the movie's setting is the Old West, before all those modern lubricants were invented. So I wondered what they would have used in a "real" situation like this one.

The oldest dildos from back in the stone age were found with traces of animal fat.

IIRC it was bear fat. Can't find any sources to cite, though.

Since man has also been eating meat since the dawn of time the most likely solution would be rendered fats after cooking. A little dab will do ya! And smells like home cookin'!

There is written evidence of using olive oil from around 350 BC, so I guess doing it Italian Style is a thing, too. https://www.condomdepot.com/condom-information/the-hist...
