Personal Note (03102019): History - WOW!

At 56, I am not the oldest fur out but I am one of the Older Ones. So there is a lot of history my eyes and other senses have seen through out the many years.

Case in point: Winter 1968 my family moved from Savana Grande/Mayaguez in Puerto Rico to New York City, and though in the early years we went back and fourth between the two family sites. The area we lived in PR did not have paved streets, we did not have electricity, and gas to cook with was brought in by 2 large 200 pound Propane Tanks secured at the back of the house. We did  not have running water, we had to get it from a hand pump in front of the house. Bathroom? Outhouse and Shower Stall outside. We grew our own vegetables and meats (eggs and chickens mostly but Grandma got milk, pork and beef at the local butcher House. From the Milk we made our own butter and cheese.) But we were happy.

Going back there now, the place has changed - greatly. I remember the last time my family core was there, a highway crew entered the town and started paving the gravel road with asphalt.

I was going to school in Puerto Rico and was quite advanced for my age. I became on of the teacher's/school's helper - I and a couple others were allowed to go out and get raw milk from the local dairy and bring it back to school where the kitchen squad poured the milk into this huge machine to pasteurize and homogenize it. I figure I was in second grade at the age of six.

Moving to NYC, I was sent to P.S.7Man. and despite my advanced skills, was sent to Kindergarten. This June is the 50th anniversary of me graduating Kindergarten. Since I started in Mid School year, I was forced to go to summer school to make up the lost time I did not have. In summer school, we were gathered around a large TV set and saw the first Moon Landing. I barely grasped the significance of this event. I understood what was going on in the later moon landings after that.

Today, though we often meet as we live in the same area, I met up with an old friend - Zelba is her name. In September 1969 I would meet her in my first grade class along with her mother who was the first grade teacher. She was not a girlfriend but she was a friend. She was a tough girl, unlike her younger sister was was dainty :D. In those days I was bullied but I fought back. That's when the bullying got worst but between Zelba and my brother Jorge, I fought off the leader of the bully group, they took care of the others who tried to jump in.

Together we climbed up the grade ladder until I was transferred to another school for the intelligently gifted. We met on and off through out the years, as adults we talked about the old times. Today we realized that in September it would be 50 years that we have been friends. 50 years. Wow... We been friends longer than most people have been alive.

50 years... *wipes away a tear* Much has happened in those 50 years. Drugs and gangs took over the neighborhood. I have seen/heard of friends dying for one reason or another. HIV and AIDS. The Civil Rights Movement ending at about 1977. Apollo missions and then the Space Shuttle. The Oil Crisis of the 70s. The Munich Olympic Games. So much has happened both locally and globally. So much history... We have been through it all.
