re: fwd: fwd: """"MAGA Hat High Schoolers Harass Native American Vietnam Vet""""

It didn't happen the way you were told it did.

The real story here is the willingness of news organizations to deliberately ignore/withhold relevant facts in order to pander to outrage.

Tim Pool is an independent, Liberal journalist who researched the hell out of all the videos, Tweets, news stories, etcetera, about the event. Here's his video, trying to establish a timeline based on what evidence actually shows, not on how it is being spun. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZTDIoywwGk

TL,DR: Some Catholic college kids attended a pro-life protest. They were told to wait on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial for their bus. A small group of Black Hebrew Israelites were nearby, preaching about how America is hypocritical because we "put God on our money and then give rights to faggots". The teens all booed this; one replied, "They're still human!" Both groups yelled at each other. The Israelites yelled at a black teen in the group for being friends with whites. Meanwhile, an American Indian group was walking through on a planned but unrelated protest. Rather than go around, they marched between the teens and Israelites, then into the group of teens. They'd been doing a school chant at that point, and when they heard the Indians' drumming, they basically treated it like a rave. Dumb and disrespectful, but not malicious. Mostly they didn't know what was going on, and in fact chanted exactly that a little later. The drummer walked up to one kid in particular and drummed very close to his face, for an incredibly uncomfortable amount of time, while he awkwardly stood there and did nothing but smile. Then eventually everyone just left.

This was a weird, confusing, uncomfortable moment with a bunch of people not understanding one another.

That doesn't make for a good headline.

There was no Bad Guy here. (Well, except for the homophobic asshole Black Israelites. I can't imagine why the mainstream news is pretending they don't exist.) So instead, this incident has become the latest white/blue dress, or Yanny/Laurel. People are seeing whatever narrative they want to believe in it, and misremembering whatever facts help make that narrative fit. The Indian drummer said that the teens were chanting "build the wall". In two hours of video, those words are not heard. Maybe he thought he did. Maybe he assumed, from their hats. Maybe he lied to smear them. Who fucking knows? Maybe some of the kids in the crowd were actually racist. All we can judge by, and all we should judge by, is what the evidence objectively shows.

But that's not emotionally satisfying. That doesn't stroke off anyone's outrage. And so, when the internet lit up with hatred, expressing their desire for these teens to be expelled, or to have violence committed against them, the news was more than happy to play along.

These journalists are lying. Outright. I feel kind of terrified by this. Just, the shameless, brazen, not-even-trying-to-hide-it-ness. "Who are you gonna believe? Me, or your lying eyes?" They are withholding necessary information, in order to craft a story. Not a news story; a bedtime story. A story to reassure your worst impulses that you are right and good to hate certain people. We don't need to hear their side of the story. We don't need evidence. It is much easier to let the news put a spoon in your mouth, and for you to nod and swallow your medicine. I am particularly shocked that Fox is spreading the same line, since you think they'd report the opposite extreme just to be contrary.

I guess we don't need evidence. As one poster on Reddit said,

"Gosh, I don’t know who to believe. A dude who was a veteran during a time when being a veteran meant you get spit on and called a baby killer or a kid who wouldn’t get out of an old dudes way."

Maybe we ought to judge things based on what really happened, not deciding guilt or innocence based on what people look like.

I view mostly independent news for that reason, and look for conflicting views if there isn't one across multiple sources when there isn't.
Glad you're still alive, Alex.

Exactly what I try to do. If Old Media is dying, maybe it deserves to. Maybe it's time to stop thinking that it's normal to get all your information from one, easy source. Maybe we should have the chaotic open shouting match of the internet, because then at least dissenting voices have a more-than-0% chance to be heard.

>Glad you're still alive, Alex.

Everyone has gotten dumber yet they still try to hold complex beliefs without understanding of others.
AlexReynard

I don't know if "dumber". We've gotta keep in mind that moral outrage is literally addictive. It lights up the brain like a narcotic. Because of the way we're wired as humans, hatred is EASY for us. So as much as this mindset is dangerous, you have to see these people as not dumb, but almost as if they're drunks. They're not the root problem. It's the people serving them shot after shot after shot.
LoZeed

It's the sad state of people who've been through uptight morals, a bunch of wars and some other screwy offensive stuff.
I highly doubt people will admit they outrage cause they enjoy it instead they'll use whatever excuse they can.

Introspection is never popular. Most of just follow our emotions and never ask why. Disobeying them is difficult.

I do think this incident is a microcosm. I've seen a lot of the behavior emerging from it elsewhere, but this is an excellent, highly-visible example. I'm so glad we have video. How many other news stories do we believe, simply because no evidence exists proving it a lie?
Delquea

IMO it better to do extensive research on your own than believe whats online half the time. I knew these stories were false because there were several inconsistencies. At least the real story is increasingly becoming public knowledge.

But as I said before, stuff like this is so common its why I ceased watching the news (and following online news source) and just do my own research. The stuff I know will piss off both sides XD I'm mainly neutral though, specifically center-left (which pisses off a LOOOOT of people)

Thanks!

And Tim Pool's quickly become one of my heroes. I don't look for angry, ranting guys anymore. I look for a certain type of weariness. Someone who started out an idealist, got bitterly disillusioned, and is now fighting for a deeper cause. People whose biggest loyalty is to truth and kindness, not any idea or group. It is really hard to stay at that point and hold onto hope. Bill Hicks was another good example.

The worrisome thing is the original story was wrong and potential malicious, then every other news outlet just regurgitated the same lines and video.

I got punked by the media due to no one putting out the whole thing until now.

It's been so fucking weird for me, as a solid liberal, to have to come to the defense of conservatives and Trump voters so often. But, like one of the teens in the video shouts out, "they're still human." I think it's worth fighting for the distinction that the people on the opposite side are my opponents, not my enemy. We are all still Americans, we are all still human, and truth matters more than party obedience.
KevinSnowpaw
5 years, 3 months ago
thats an easy one, thats happening BECOUSE your a classical Liberal and the left has become increaseingly LESS liberal as time goes on...Im in the same boat there. Trumps an idiot but hes not the literal devil for example lol.

I find myself defending shit that makes my friends go "oh you must be lie super right wing!"

No, I'm just calling out what I see and trying to look at the truth of a given situation.

wich is becomeing harder and harder and HARDER when we cant even trust the god damned media.
AlexReynard
5 years, 3 months ago
<vigorous nodding and shaking your hand> I am in the exact same boat. God, it's nice to feel like I'm not alone.

Roseanne hit the nail exactly on the head. She was on Jimmy Kimmel and he asked why she was supporting Trump when she'd been such a staunch Democrat in the past. "I didn't change. YOU guys did!"
KevinSnowpaw
5 years, 3 months ago
EXACTLY!!!

it's why so meny like minded liberals are leaning right now...it's not becouse were all suddenly republicans, not that it would be a bad thing I dont see it as Republicans are good democrates are bad grr or anything like that, there just party afliations, but the left has gone BAT SHIT lately, and left the liberal minded people who are still Aware enough to realize were not playing for fucking RED team or BLUE team were playing for America...alone in the cold so to speak.

but no your not alone.

Sorry dude, My family was present for this one. My family's account is closer to the very many accounts then to Tim Pool's account of the events.

Tim Pool has been caught outright lying on more then one occasion, especially during his coverage of Occupy Wall Street and his coverage of Rinkeby.

Let's not imply that my family, ABC, Bloomberg, CBS, CNN, Reuters, or Fox have never been caught lying.Lying all together seems super unlikely however, no matter what angle you come at it from. I'm more likely to believe the dude who seeks facts to fit his theories is more likely to embellish and connect flimsy strings together.

The press has it's problems but surely
YOU can do better then THAT.
AlexReynard
5 years, 2 months ago
I'm not believing Tim Pool. I'm believing the video evidence he's gathered, and my own eyes when I watch it. The problem with any eyewitness account is that we see what we, personally, want to focus on. But the camera is an inanimate eye. I'm going to believe film over anyone's word, always. Just like with the Ray Rice elevator incident. I didn't care that the whole world was calling him a violent wife abuser, the video showed otherwise.
Kupok
5 years, 2 months ago
He uses the same video the other outlets are using and spends most of the 18 minutes of his video speculating and adding theories on top of that video and posts screenshots of a classmate trying to cover his friend's ass, calling the natural act of covering your friend's ass "evidence of a conspiracy."

If I spend 18 minutes talking about about a video while showing loosely collected threads, will you believe my theories?

Again.
You can do better then this.
CuriousFerret
5 years, 2 months ago
He links the entire event in the video, feel free to scroll through it.

He also put up the first reported comments from the students side.

The biggest thing he points out is who approached who and in what manner. The vet moves between the two opposing political groups trading barbs and insults, makes a scene, it defuses the situation, and it breaks up.

There isn't condemnation of character or excuses for what was being said. The media left enough out that everyone was making assumptions and putting words in the students mouth and ignoring what they acctually said.

The poor reporting, and misrepresentation made the whole thing worse for everyone involved.

Please do feel.free to not like the students and they political and religous views.  That is a valid opinion.
AlexReynard
5 years, 2 months ago
>He uses the same video the other outlets are using

I've so far not seen any of the media even mention the Black Israelites.

>and spends most of the 18 minutes of his video speculating and adding theories on top of that video

You could say that, or you could say he's describing what the video shows.

>and posts screenshots of a classmate trying to cover his friend's ass, calling the natural act of covering your friend's ass "evidence of a conspiracy."

Incorrect. I don't remember him using that phrase. Though if he did, what he was referring to was the fact that journalists are supposed to investigate all sources. It's the fact that they have taken just one person in this story and run their side of it without interviewing anyone else involved. That is either shameful laziness, or collusion to create a lurid narrative that will drive ratings.

>If I spend 18 minutes talking about about a video while showing loosely collected threads, will you believe my theories?

If you can show me video where these kids actually harass the American Indians, or yell "build the wall", or back up any similar claims, then that would convince me.

I live locally where these students school is. And we got native Americans, blacks and all these other groups protesting the catholic school now. I guess the best way to appease these groups is to give up the church's teaching on contraception then. It doesn't seem that anyone really wants to get along anymore. Is this really good for mankind?
AlexReynard

>And we got native Americans, blacks and all these other groups protesting the catholic school now.

Kind of reminds me of when the Rolling Stone ran their article about campus rape, and the fraternity named was vandalized and screamed at for months, and then it turned out their source was lying. Oopsie!

>I guess the best way to appease these groups is to give up the church's teaching on contraception then.

There is no appeasement. None. If you apologize, they will demand more. If you refuse to apologize, they will do whatever they can to censor you and cut off your income. Our culture is going in an ugly, ugly direction.

>It doesn't seem that anyone really wants to get along anymore. Is this really good for mankind?

It's creeped me out, seeing how much the anti-racism crowd is now demanding segregation and judging people by skin color. I've said before, the racist mindset never went away. We've never addressed the root problem of how easy and addictive it is to think in stereotypes, and feel superior to "enemies". All we did was swap the acceptable targets.

Tim Pool pisses me off with his non-commitment to any one side. And yet that's why I value his videos and check his channel whenever I hear of something happening. As he's been accused of many times, he's a fence-sitter, doing his best to pay attention but not get involved. My reaction is purely emotional frustration and he's one of the few journalists whose work I feel I can trust.
AlexReynard
5 years, 2 months ago
Well said. Neutrality is undervalued. My Grandfather was very noncommittal and hated arguments. Yet, in a family riddled with mental illness, he got along with everybody. In a family of enemies, he was no one's. So, it has its place. And in a journalist, it's of particular importance.
