SAI...ouchie

by
Today I tried opening a 36mb PSD file in SAI. I waited patiently, then the 'waiting' indicator vanished, the screen froze, and my mouse wouldn't move for like 3 minutes. I CTRL+ALT+Deleted that bastard, then noticed SAI was using like 2.5gb of memory (i only have 4gb). So I killed it and my computer was normal again. Then I tried opening the SAME FILE in Photoshop. It took about 10 seconds and didn't produce any errors at all. It also only used about 1.5gb of memory.

I also can't export anything as jpg or png in SAI...sometimes. All these bugs seriously makes me wanna go back to Photoshop again, at least for painting. SAI still rocks hard in the drawing and sketching department though.

Maybe I can tweak PS enough to work like SAI though. I already got an autothokey script that let's me resize the brush by holding "A" and dragging horizontally. Still feels a little clunky though compared to the way SAI works, but I freaking adore the feature of holding "Z" to zoom in and out dynamically, and "R" to rotate the canvas. I was also able to remap those keys to "Q" for rotation and "W" for zoom ;)  Now I just need to make a decent "hider" script for PS's pallets, and later maybe a color wheel extension that's better than what's currently out there.

I'm waiting on this. It's a SAI-like program made by the same guys that made Manga Studio. It looks pretty cool, but only comes in japanese so far.

Smith micro says there are no plans for an international release from them, though :(

That really blows rotten whale chunks. Might be possible to translate it manually though.

Looks like a really nice app. *checks it out and downloads the manuals to it*

For the few minutes I poked at SAI, I noticed it was somewhat unstable and inconsistent.  I had wondered if it was just me.  <laughs>

From what I hear, the newer Photoshops (CS4/5) -can- be tweaked to behave much like SAI, but I have zero experience in the matter.  :-[

Holy crap 9_9
Just because the file itself is in SAI format? What version of SAI are you using? I use 1.1.0 and always save everything I do in psd format just in case of SAI's bugs and to be able to see them in ACDSee (my image viewer). Do these messed up psd files still open up in SAI? Are they the same size as the .sai file itself?

Huh...geez. Okay, I'm using photoshop cs5, how about you? If nothing else works, maybe you could use faststone image viewer to convert your SAI psd into a jpg at full res, open that in Photoshop, then place the text accordingly, delete the image's layer keeping only the text, then save as a transparent png or psd file, and open that in SAI and line the text up.
