Blender vs maya

So I have been working on making good hair and fur effects in blender, but it seams like maya has a much better system for making hair/fur. As in the jungle book level of quality, I am beginning to wonder if I should look into learning maya, just for its hair and animation. I have seen some of the smut made with is also really high quality.

At this point just food for thought, but I might be able to get my hands on it, so I am seriously considering if it is worth my time to learn a whole new program.

I'd say to keep your eye on it. I know a couple of artists who have used it, perhaps you could learn a thing or two, especially if you're going for hair and such.

Thanks, I think I may start to dabble on the side, I'm just taking a look for now.

Well, it is always important to know how to use and know several tools for your work. Also, with the dedication you put into your animations, I do not think it's going to be any problem for you to learn to use another program. In the end, if you do not use it at least you know it is there when you need it.

You make a good point, and thank you, I do put in a bit of work for these animations. Its all worth it though.

Maya is end game. You can go on whatever you want to do after Maya.. it's endless.. from animation to effects to games.. I would go for the best if i want to do the best..

Hmm, I think you may be right. Even if I can get my hands on it, its a long learning curve. But I'll look into getting it.

Some say that Blender has a long learning curve. Mostly do to it's UI.

As for Fur, I have seen some real good fur done in blender, but aparently it is not easy to do. I'm sure most know of the short film Big Buck Bunny shown here-

That has some real good looking fur in it, all done in Blender.

But others here are right. It's like comparing Unity to Unreal or even CryEngine. Unity works, and works real good when you know how to get the most out of it. But It still takes a back seat to what can be done in Unreal and take a far back seat to CryEngine.

So Unity is not bad, but it is about what you want to get out of it, and you can take Unity only so far before it starts to feel like it is missing something. A real high quality you don't have to mess with all the setting to get even close to what the other two can do.

If you can get Maya no prob, I'd say go for it. See what you can do with it, and if it suits you. On a plus side to Maya, even if the furring can't be done any better or faster than in Blender, Maya still has a much better rendering system and set of tools to it, and that alone can make it worth the cost to use.

One note however. Fur: No matter what you try to use, it is going to take a long time to render out just one frame, if you want that supper high quality look to it. It's just the nature of the beast, on anything. Unless you got a render farm. You can kind of tame that beast some in one of those.
