Happy Thanksgiving everyone.

This bird is running his tailfeathers off getting ready for the big feast, but at least the (other) bird is in the oven, so I've got a moment to catch my breath before working on the Candied Yams. (my Thanksgiving specialty: It's just the old Betty Crocker recipe, minus the salt, but it's the fact that I baste them every 15 minutes that allows them to really soak in the butter&brown sugar sauce and really transform from vegetable to sweet treat.)

You draw the short straw for dinner this year or is this the norm for you?

Normally I'm just charged with smoking the turkey but the wife was burnt out so I handled the whole menu this year.

You may find this hard to believe, but I actually ENJOY hosting Thanksgiving.  Yes, it's hectic, and yes it can be stressful when guests try to "help" and end up throwing off my cooking schedule as I shoo them out of the kitchen, but it's very rewarding work.

I can believe anyone likes cooking or hosting and you never gave an impression one way or another on the subject so no reason to doubt it's something you enjoy.

While I'm pretty good with a select number of recipes and take pride in my work, I'm not overly fond of cooking itself if that makes sense.

Normally I just do the turkey - brine it the day before, take ten minutes to put together a sufficient quantity of my rub, another ten minutes to apply to the turkey and get it set up in the smoker and then just stay out of the wife's way and make sure there's enough water and wood in the smoker to do the job while reading the news feeds and enjoying a few cigars outside in Orlando's beautiful weather - was low to mid-seventies most of today.

Hope your feast worked out as well as mine did - tomorrow we may fight but today we can feast!

Don't remember you mentioning you living in Florida before.

Reminds me of a side comment I made during a post-feast game of Chronology, The card was looking for the year Ponce DeLeon "discovered" Florida during his search for the Fountain of Youth.

I mentioned to another player, "Heh, he went searching for the Fountain of Youth, but found the Land of the Aged."

That little joke aside, enjoy the Florida peninsula.

Yeah - moved seven or eight years ago and mention it periodically in journals and comments.

Everyone thinks the old timers come down here for the weather but there's a lesser known secret about FL that attracts them - no state income tax - one of the many joys of red state living.

First year I had to do my taxes down here and I was getting worried that I hadn't received the tax form for the state taxes yet then the wife informed me there are none in FL - no local income tax either - 5% pay raise!

Rest assured I am loving it down here - taking a little break right now from putting up my Christmas lights and its 76 degrees right now - if I were still in Philly it'd be 30 degrees - /dance!
