Writing About Writing

So I was driving the other day and just letting my mind wander, as you do, and I started looking at the different conflicts for each character in IDM, which seemed like a good writer’s exercise so yeah, thought I’d share that. Now, keeping in mind that writing-wise I just finished the first draft of Zone 14, and actual production-wise I’m in the process of animating scene 2 of Zone 1...and that I’ll be going back and finishing animation on scene 1 once I’m finally through scene 2. Soooo, yeah. Writing-wise, I’m working on what I consider the second arc, and animation-wise, I’m about 2 seconds into the first half-hour episode...and that’s rounding up. Writing is FAR in advance of current production.

So I’m going through everybody’s main conflicts at the current point (and draft) in the script in my mind: Sonic’s worried about his friends who aren’t handling things well, has creepy nanobots running through him from earlier, and doesn’t realize how close he is to tearing off to be a hobo (yanno, Sonic’s got more going on than I realized...heh.); Tails, like Sonic, is ecstatic over what’s happened but worried about the people who aren’t handling it well, is fighting nanobots like a boss, and has his chronic conflicts with ageism, as well as the problems with his dad that I’m still getting a grasp on; Tails’ dad...is a trip, I’m still figuring him out; Knux is majorly struggling with his anger, and completely trying to reject it on principle (dumb plan!); Rouge is dealing with the whole TF in general, and not well; Shadow was just on the Arc with only Tikal for company for fuckin’ ages, and is Shadowing super hard; Casey is dealing with the fact that two of her cousins spontaneously transformed into Mobians, and one is taking it unsettlingly well and the other doing a much more traditional complete freakout; but then there’s Tikal and Mark.

Tikal...Tikal is Tikal. She’s a natural peacemaker who loves to help nurture and support people. Later on that’ll start to wear on her, and she’ll need to learn to also take care of herself, but where we are in the story right now, everything’s pretty good for Tikal. Sure, it’s hard, but it’s seriously looking up.

And then there’s Mark. Mark can’t see through the perception filter, because Mark doesn’t want to see through the perception filter. Nothing really affects Mark...except roller coasters. He’s aware of all the drama happening with the people around him, but he is profoundly uninterested, and has done a damn good job of staying out of it. But, uh, conflict? What he wants, what he needs, what he’s struggling with, or trying to pursue? Not sure.

So I had two characters with particularly limited on-screen development happening, who needed something to do. So I’m mulling it over, what is Mark’s conflict? Tikal’s can come later, fine, but Mark? What drives Mark? First thing that pops into my head: Basketball. Mark wants to play basketball. I then promptly had a giggle-fit.

But...yeah. Mark doesn’t need a big conflict at this point in the story, it can change later. His drive right now can be a smaller one, and that’s okay. It still gives him something to do, and upon starting to write it, it was really kinda fun getting into his head as everyone around him is just losing their shit as he watches with no intent to engage cuz hey, that’s their shit.

I also have a kinda-goal to show scenes of each character having one-on-one interaction with one another...so long story short, I get to write Mark teaching Tikal how to basketball! Another giggle-fit commenced.

Well my question is, what is the story for?  Is it for a comic or a book?

It's the big ridiculous animation I've been working on.
