An Interesting Question / Una Pregunta Interesante

Hey guys, I have a question, this is mostly for people who draw, but anybody who read this is welcome.

Which character is for you the most difficult to draw? Because for me was Djali.. until today. Djali is hard, the head is, well, weird, but is cute and is nothing compared with the other character I was trying to draw.

I am drawing some characters from TLK (maybe projects for the next year), Simba is a character with a good level of difficult, Kovu is a good challenge... but I decided draw Nuka... DAMN IT! Is so bizarre the design, very difficult, it brokes with everything I know about the design of lions and my style and/or any stuff I draw: he has a large and flat head, super huge nose, small eyes, big mouth, weird haircut, is a crazy dude... Basically his life is smoke weed everyday. And curiously here almost not exist good art about him, I think he deserves something... personally I found his death so sad, poor guy.  :v

This is for now the most difficult character I ever draw, and you? let me know.  :)

I'd say for me lots of characters come easy to draw since I try to draw them in my own style rather then their original way, but just from difficulty alone I'd have to say Jenna from Balto is hard mostly because I wanted to try and replicate the way she's drawn in the movie, which in itself is hard to draw in the first place.

Second would have to be Balto, again mostly from the same issues I had with Jenna, but after i said screw it and just went with whatever type of version i wanted, I'd say just try and draw from you're own style, whatever is comfortable I always say. Makes drawing new characters ten times better and easier. ^^

Totally feel the same way with Nuka, barely has any decent art, and not sure if it's mostly due to the way he's drawn, his character, or what but yeah I'd love to see at least a few pics of him. ^^

Is a hard character, maybe is the same problem as with Nuka: flat head and big nose. I never tried as a serious project, but maybe, maybe if you try drawing him with the nose maybe can be more easy to draw, at least is something I learned when I draw: big nose, start drawing there, big eyes, start there. =P

From these particular characters?
Well, I have never drawn Djali before so I can't say anything about him but when it comes to the Lion King Nuka is indeed quite hard for me to draw. Actually that goes for the outsiders in general.
The reason for that is, at least for me, that when I tried to adapt the Lion King style to draw some of those characters I went for the style of the main characters first.
Simba, Nala, Kiara and Kion have relatively similar "base models", if that makes any sense.
However the outsiders are a bit different. Their angles are sharper and the main characters, Zira, Nuka and Vitani are all a bit different from each other.
Kovu is actually a mix of the bad and good guy styles and, just like in the movie, brings both of them together.
Nevertheless it is the style of the "good lions" that I learned first and once I got that it was relatively hard to keep myself from applying it to the outsider lions.
And from these Nuka is indeed the hardest one for me to draw because this particular character comes to life with his personality, maybe even more so than the others because his personality is actually way more complex than you'd think at first.
Capturing that is quite difficult.

The few times I have actually drawn him I tried to give him a moment of success and happiness, something which he didn't get in the movie and which makes this character so extremely tragic.

Oh, not exactly those characters, I put as an example.  xD

But yes, you are right about Nuka, he is not a happy character because he is the real son of Scar and doesn´t have the special attention with his mom... But yes is very very very hard character, I made a couple of sketches and I cannot make him happy or crazy, I am more like Bambi: small mouth, small cute smile, and that one is a damn huge mouth, something worse than the creepy Cheshire version I draw. Is a real challenge compared with the other lions.  :/

For me it helped when I actually didn't focus on his mouth but rather on the expression of his eyes.
Nuka has these big dark patches underneath his eyes with which you can use to give him a different expression than just being angry.
If you google for the words "Nuka Smile" you will get some really good examples.

Yeah, but still looking as a creepy or a mad character, maybe because was created on base on it?

SHould be cool see if exist concept arts of the original Disney film.

There is some concept art for the movie.
Actually Nuka looks even more creepy in the concept art than the final version.
As strange as it sounds, they actually toned him down for the movie.

Really? Awesome.  :o

Where is the concept art? (I hope is not on pinterest  :v  )

No, it's not on pinterest.
It's on the Lion King wikia.
Just search for "The Lion King 2 concept art" via Google and you should find it quite easily.

Oh, I checked it, wow, he looked... well, different, for some reason his face remember me the lion from the movie Bedknobs and Broomsticks, you know, that kind of Don Bluth style with flat face, big mouth, small eyes.

Should be interesting see this lion on the movie, looks brute and aggressive.
