Going forwards...

This has been on my mind for some time so I've been debating this with myself deeply. I really don't want to do this to people but it's becoming more of a burden to me than I care for it to be.

I'll likely will not be doing personal commissions any longer.

Most likely I'll will be only doing YCHs. I know most people don't like them but given just how I operate it's much easier for me.

I'm sorry... as I'm thinking I'm pretty scatter-brained as of late. Hard to focus.

Yeah I feel you man. I think I'm going to end up doing likewise, or at least drastically cut down on individual commissions. I feel like they tend to be taxing on creative moral and they really haven't turned out to be a reliable source of income.

Artist tend to forget they're actually only doing art for themselves even when they're doing commissions.
Do whatever YOU want, you'll have fans and buyers no matter what,PLUS you'll enjoy creating it. And good luck.

This really doesn't seem to ring true at all in my experience. Maybe if you're popular enough, but...

Which part?

Doing it for yourself, especially for commission work, tends to drive people away more than anything. Like I said, maybe I'm just not popular, but clients tend to hate it when I object to ideas or elements of a commission that I just don't want to draw.

First off, as far as popularity goes, you've been here just over two years and have 500 watchers, I've been here over 8 years and am only JUST reaching 500 so you're FAR more popular than I am.

But that's not the point.  Are you saying that as an artist taking commissions you HAVE to take commissions that you don't like or feel uncomfortable doing if the client has the money to pay for it?

I don't know, maybe I'm missing something in what you're saying but that's how it seems to me.

There's a difference between someone holding a gun to your head and it being a bad idea to do something. If you want to grow your clientele and actually make a living off art, rather than just drawing for yourself and sometimes making an amount of money, you really do have to do things you may not enjoy. That's a part of life.
Moreover there's a difference between something being a thing you absolutely can't stand to do and something being a thing you could do if you had a reason to, but don't necessarily always enjoy doing. Often, commission work will fall into the later. That's the nature of drawing what other people want you to; it very rarely will be exactly the thing you wanted to draw in that moment. But, ya gotta eat, y'know?

It really isn't as simple as "well just draw what you want and fuck everyone else! recipe for success!".

So you WOULD draw a scat orgy with cubs being beaten bloody with chains if the price was right.

I'm not fond of penis but I still draw penis and males for money, because cutting that out of my life would also cut out the majority of my target market.

This is Adulting 101.

You didn't answer my question.
Would you do it if someone offered you a lot of money.

Also you may not be fond of drawing penises but you still draw them in YOUR style..and that's what your clientele are commissioning you for: YOUR style. You have a style people like and they want. YOU have YOUR style and draw how YOU want and people pay you for it.  I don't think you go home and draw in other artists styles just so they come to you to get a commission in Artist *A's* style rather than your own. That's what I meant by drawing what YOU want. Sorry if that didn't come across in my first post. If it didn't my bad.

But I still want my question answered.

drawing in my style doesn't mean drawing what I want or drawing for me. I think a lot of artists feel that way. Also, I have gotten commissions specifically focussed around trying to ape another art style, and there's a lot of value to some people for sticking closer to the reference material, especially in Rule34 art.

I didn't answer your question because I didn't think it was actually important to answer unless you were actually asking me to draw that for money, which I assumed you were not. If you are; no, I would not. That's outside of what I can cope with.

Fair enough.
You've pretty much answered my questions and I do understand what you're saying.
That's pretty much it for me then. Thank you for your time and good luck.

I know that pain. You might find that just taking long breaks between them and being less flexible can work as well, though.

I think you are suffering from burnout from drawing furry art all the time. I've seen some of your non-furry art before especially with that drawing of hellboy, why not try your hand at something different for a while? I myself am starting to shift away from doing exclusively furry content and expanding into the territory of Fantasy content where I've had great success.
