Computer Trouble (solved, stupid, and venting)

Nghh... Windows annoys me as much as the next guy, but for the most part I don't have computer problems often.  My system is about 6 years old overall, and being selective with patches (about once a month at most) keeps my system working in top condition.  Just to give you an idea, I haven't seen a blue screen on this machine since I built it, and my previous machine running XP gave me a BSOD about once every two years.  Things rarely go wrong, and every time I've tried to switch to Linux over the last 15 years, I end up coming right back to Windows because, ironically, it gives me fewer problems than anything else I've tried.  Even my Macs gave me a ton of problems that Windows never has.  My PCs have all worked, and they are always rock solid stable.  No viruses or malware, a proper firewall, and nothing running in the background I don't know about.  Clean as a whistle!

So when things do go wrong, I panic.

Yesterday, my machine just stated doing weird stuff where I couldn't close windows, and window focus just seemed to be totally random.  The taskbar didn't work at all, and applications had a mind of their own.  I could navigate with the keyboard, but mouse control was all screwed up.  I quickly ruled out both mouse buttons as being faulty.  I disabled software services, swapped out drivers, did a system integrity check, and outright cussed Windows for doing something stupid again.  Yet, everything tested out just fine.  I plugged in and tested some alternate hardware, too, to no avail.

I was tearing my hair out trying to find what kind of software problem was making my computer unusable, and wasted an entire day trying to fix this.  Finally, I broke down and accepted I'd just have to re-install my PC again, which is the nuclear option I never want to do, since it takes FOREVER to re-install all my development tools.

Then, I finally figured out what the problem is.  My mouse, which is not quite a year old, has a sticking mouse wheel switch.  My PC thinks I'm constantly holding down the 3rd mouse button.

I'm not sure what's worse.  The fact that Windows doesn't make it obvious that the infrequently-used 3rd mouse button is always engaged, or that so much havoc could be caused by one tiny little switch.  Seriously, who actually uses the mouse wheel to click?  It's a button with usability so terrible, that just shouldn't exist at all!

Nonetheless, I feel stupid for being duped so long by something that should be so obvious, and yet again blaming software for a silly little hardware problem.

So, yeah, I lost a day of productivity and will have to get out my soldering iron tomorrow to rip that little sucker out, since I don't need it.  At least fixing a mouse won't take the 2-3 days it would normally take me to reinstall Windows7.

What can I say?  Yes, I do expect computers to be perfect.  But clearly I am not.  8)

" Seriously, who actually uses the mouse wheel to click?

Me, all the time, since in most modern browsers it's set to "open in a new tab" by default.

I use shift-click instead to open in a new window, and I've remapped one of my keyboard's media keys to close windows.

Tabs... ew.

I tried installing Windows10 on a test system in my media room.  I love how the upgrader told me, "All your files will be right where you left them", but once the install was finished, it told me 11 applications were removed since they are "incompatible".  No warning, no asking permission, no opportunity to update, or anything.  The applications were just outright deleted with no way to get the files back.  Yeah, there's no way I'm allowing automatically updating software to just delete stuff indiscriminately without permission.  How can it be legal for MS to delete 3rd party software they don't own?

When my sister brought me her computer to "fix", it turns out Win10 had just installed itself without her knowledge.  The Win10 updater renamed her Home folder and changed its permissions, so she couldn't open it and was completely locked out.  I had to do all kinds of low-level stuff to open up the folder again, and I almost got to the point of giving up and using a Linux boot drive to recover the files.

I won't touch Win10 with a barge pole.  It's just nasty.

Hoo boy. I had an issue with my mouse double clicking. Turned out that the spring inside the button had loosened and needed to be readjusted. The problem is that the spring inside a mouse button is incredibly small and vexingly hard to reinsert once it's been removed. After twenty minutes of failure, I threw the mother of all fits and chucked the mouse into the trash. I didn't want to order a new mouse, but it was worth the eight dollars to avoid a lot of unnecessary frustration.

After some contemplation, I realized that I could have just desoldered the old mouse button and popped in a fresh one from another source. Arrgh...

I doubt it.  I had a series of Logitech mice that all looked the same from the outside, but all used different and incompatible mechanics on the inside.  When my Logitech MX300 started getting wonky, I thought I could "build" a new mouse by scavenging parts, only to find out that none of the parts would fit properly.

After sifting through hundreds of mice online and buying 3 different models, I finally got one that fits my hand properly.  I've got a drawer full of mice, many from the same manufacturers, and none of them are hardware compatible.  Ugh.

I use the mouse wheel for clicking in games, but still this really sucks! But at least everything seems to work fine now^^

On my Mac, clicking the wheel button opens Dashboard, so disabling it isn't an option as I check the weather report several times a day...

They still don't let you remap that stuff?  It ticked me off to no end that I only had exactly 3 keymap choices for Hot Corners, instead of letting me choose whatever I wanted.  That was, what... eight years ago?

Oh, you can remap it, but I prefer using the scroll button for Dashboard; quicker that way.  :D
