My art doesn't compress well @_@

For the longest time, whenever I posted any of my work online, it was as if it became cursed and suddenly looked terrible.
The thumbnails looked especially horrid on deviantArt.  I would look at others work and get depressed with how nice their work looked compared to mine when in thumbnails.
At normal viewing size, my art is fine.  I love drawing and painting on large canvas, especially since I was classically trained in college.  But large detailed art is not computer screen friendly.
I'll go hide in a hole now.

What approximate canvas size and dpi setting do you normally use when saving your finished work?

I typically go with 300 dpi, and as for canvas size, I go with how large I would like to print it.  I might have to consider custom thumbnails, but I'm lazy...

From what I can tell, down-scaling anything with high contrast patterns or very thin lines tends to distort the art somewhat. I've seen some strange distortion with black and white comic pages that use lots of action lines, for example. For custom thumbnails, maybe try manually resizing them to 300x300px and converting to 72 dpi to try to get ahead of any automatic file conversion IB might try to do.

is a great example of a piece with both thin lines and high contrast, that doesn't downscale so well. But it's still interesting and colorful enough to catch people's eye imho! ^.^
