Another Week Along: Ask Me Anything

If you are reading this journal, please ask me any one question in the comments. If you post before 11:59 PM PDT on Thursday, 24 May 2018, I will answer your question by 11:59 PM PDT on Friday 25 May 2018. Mind you, I do not promise I will answer it to the best of my ability or with unerring truth, but I will answer your questions! One question per comment, if you have multiple questions make separate comments.

With that out of the way, let's answer one question up front: "Kharon, your sketches look better than my best drawings, so why do you keep saying you need to improve?"

Answer: Because I do need to improve. Sketch Summer is about improving myself in three ways: regular production, consistent production, and regular & consistent publication. This is not my first attempt at a summer project, and it will probably not be my last, but this is a way to give myself a timeframe in which to push and improve some skill. This year, my chosen skill is 2D artwork. So what do each of my three goals mean?

Regularity means producing something on a regular basis. It means making time to draw and produce artwork, and it means not making excuses for my failures. Yes, reasons come up, real reasons that may excuse shortcomings, but the habit of making excuses is not about finding roots, it is about avoiding responsibility. The goal of regular production is a goal about being responsible and producing something, even if it is not my best work, as close as possible to every single day.

Consistency means improving the quality of my artwork to the point that I can create consistently high quality and consistently recognizable artwork. I do not mean that I am trying to develop my style, but one problem I have struggled with for as long as I can remember is that of depicting the same subject in multiple illustrations. So along with producing better art every day, I want to be able to produce consistent features on characters across days and sessions.

Publication means exactly that: I am not keeping these sketches to myself, but I am sharing them as broadly as I am comfortable for the purposes of feedback and marketing (sorry if that sounds shameless). Artists do not exist in a void, they exist within a community, and successful artists are not only doing something they are passionate about, but are meeting the needs, wants, and interests of some community (whether they do so freely or for compensation). Anybody can draw for their own enjoyment, but artists create for a combination of their own enjoyment and the enjoyment of others, and that is why I feel that improving my publication rate is so very important. Even if I reduce my pace in the future, it is my intention to publish almost every image I create, so starting with my sketches right now, I want to publish as much of my work as possible.

CURRENT SCORE: 12/16

As of 1:00 AM EDT, 23 May 2018, I have missed 4 days, for a current score of 75% on my Sketch Summer. Note that there is no extra credit -- and there will be only 116 total days.

Update: (23 May) There may be less than 116 days. My multimedia hard drive appears to have stopped functioning, and until I am able to recover it, a lot of my reference, and my save location, are gone. I will update you all as I work through the situation.
