That One Time Shrek Referenced Peer Gynt

by
" . . . These layers just go endlessly on and on!
Shouldn't it give up its kernel soon?
Damned if it does! To the innermost filler,
It's nothing but layers! Smaller and smaller.
Nature is witty . . . " -Hendrik Ibsen

That is an excerpt of the famous "Onion Monologue" from Peer Gynt. Now, 1000 questions might be shotgunning through your mind right now, so let me clarify.

Peer Gynt is a famous Verse-Epic written by a Norwegian named Hendrik Ibsen. The epic was made into a play production with a certain Edvard Grieg. You know Grieg from the famous musical piece called "In the Hall of the Mountain King" ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kLp_Hh6DKWc )

Now, the excerpt in question is from the final act of the play-poem; the whole scene is basically Peer coming to grips with who and what he is. Basically, he's tearing apart an onion and discovering the layers of said onion and reciting how those layers are himself.

"No! Layers! Onions have layers. Ogres have layers. Onions have layers. You get it? We both have layers." -Four dudes who wrote the script for Shrek

When I was reading this play in full, this was the first thing that struck out to me. A small bit from a fairy tale satire referencing this one crucial scene from an old play somehow, either directly or indirectly. I guess Nature is pretty fuckin witty.

What does this have anything to do with anything? I don't know, Peer Gynt, Existential Dread, and Musical Projects have flooded my mind and I've been a bit worn out from school, life, and such. So sometimes I just have to rant about something nonsensical, so it's not just 10 journals of me going "life sucks bruh".

I have been doing some art work, but I'm torn between so many projects and I'm also kinda dealing with the big "what am I doing with my life?" question too. Although, Ty the Tasmanian Tiger, Usagi Yojimbo, and Rule 34 have all been dominating my mind as well, so yeah . . .

Also, these songs have been stuck on my mind too:
