Quick Movie Review: Ghost Rider 2

Just got back from watching Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.

Much better than the first film. This was directed by the the same two that did Crank and Crank 2, so that should give a good idea of what to expect. But they do tone down the content in this. It was a lot of fun and the opening and final action sequences were well done with good choreographing and camera work, though it was their style of a shaky cam. You get a couple hilarious scenes of Nic Cage overacting, which is always a treat in any movie. And the one thing I really liked was that they made the Ghost Rider itself more of a monster and an unpredictable unearthly entity. It really did seem that Johnny Blaze and the Rider was two different beings.

Down side is the more obvious. The directors are known for their experimental style of film making and some of it works, but there was a lot of jarring effects that could of been done better or done without entirely. There is, as expected, some horrifically bad dialogue and acting as well.

Last, I did wind up seeing the movie in 3D. I rather of not but was the next one showing and did not feel like waiting for the 2D showing. For post converted, it was actually not bad. Not good, but it was obvious they tried to put it to good use.

Overall, it was a much better film than the first movie(for me anyway) and had a lot of fun watching it.
3 out of 5 rating

Edit: I should note this was on a personal scale. Be warned, this was not an actual good movie. It was just fun to watch and a guilty pleasure. A real rating from me as a critic would be more of a 2 out of 5.

Nicholas Cage does THE BEST impression of Nicholas Cage
of anyone I've seen. HE MAKES THE MOVIE! And you're right.
This is NOT a good movie..but it is a FUN movie. I hope people
can realize the difference. :D

I felt that the movie itself was about on par with the first one in that it could have been much better then it was, as much as I like Nic Cage I still feel that he would have been better for a different role and that they could have gotten someone more accurate to portray Johnny Blaze. Wasn't crazy about the style of filming they used or really the plot in general, likewise I felt that while the movie's villian, Blackout, was more formidable then his incarnation in the comics was still a poor choice and rather anti-climatic in terms of someone to pit Ghost Rider against. I would rather they start out with weaker villians like Zodiac and Deathwatch before working their way towards the heavy hitters like Blackheart and Vengeance, while we're on the subject perhaps they could think of some more original villians for Ghost Rider to fight or use some of the more supernatural incarnations of villians that aren't being used for other superheroes like Demogoblin and Jack'o'Lantern so everyone GR fights isn't a spoof of a Batman villian.

I will give you that they handled certain things better than they did in the first movie, mostly the portrayal of Ghost Rider himself when Zarathos is in control. He actually looked more like how you would expect him to look for someone who's head is supposed to be on fire, other things like the way he was swaying about like a drunk I wasn't really crazy about though I did like how they covered how he can infuse pretty much anything with hellfire.

You pretty much nailed the the glaring problems from a fans perspective. Sadly, I am not that familiar with the comics and was watching it from a naive point of view with low expectations. Do I want another sequel? Hell no.

This is one Columbia Pictures needs to reboot or let it go and give it back to Marvel.

But as I said, I had fun watching this one unlike the first. Mostly cause of the interrogation scene and Cage's acting made laughing hard. I might actually hate this film a second viewing. ;3

Ghost Rider's biggest failing is a common one among the majority of heroes that arent' the X-Men, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Batman, and to a lesser extent Superman. Namely he doesn't really have any noteworthy villians outside of maybe one or two people and honestly the ones he does have came into play when Danny Ketch was the Ghost Rider, outside of Mestopholese I can't name anyone Johnny Blaze had for a villian. Hell even when Zarathros was seperated from Johnny Blaze and became a villian that was still one of Danny Ketch's villians.

As much as I complain about the movies I still would like to see Ghost Rider get another movie, especially if it was Marvel getting it to do a reboot. That way Nic could get recycled like Chris Evans was (though I think he made a great Torch) and use him to play someone more fitting for him (I really think he'd make a great Doctor Strange, just look at how he was in Season of the Witch and The Sorcerer's Apprentice). As much as I like him I don't think Nic is suited for a role that requires him to be whiny about his situation or overly dramatic, he seems to be better for the more stotic roles because otherwise you can't really take him seriously.

I hardly know a thing in the Marvel Comic-verse. In fact, I haven't picked up a single Marvel comic in my life! o.0 (I know what I know from the few IRL friends I have that do read Marvel, and the cartoons) So, I would not be in any position to to take a "Fan's eye" to this, like Rush clearly has. =3 So, I'd be like you and view it as a fun movie but not so much the second time...  In fact, there's only ONE movie I loved so much I had to see it THREE times- Bolt.
