My notes on RP

Let me start by saying these are by no means any kind of "rules" or "requirements." They're just my thoughts and opinions.

1) Roles
I see what role you're playing as as more important than what character you're playing as. For instance, are you playing the role of mom or dad, or the role of son or daughter? The role of aunt or uncle or babysitter, or the role of niece or nephew? The role of teacher or principal or student? Doctor or nurse or patient? Bully or kidnapper or victim? None of the above? Whatever the case, I feel like it's more important than what character you're playing as.

2) Level of control
In a roleplay, there can be varying levels of control granted to each player. Some people like RPs where each person writes out a whole paragraph or two at a time in which he or she says what both characters are doing. Other people prefer RPs that consist of single sentences rallied back and forth like tennis, where each player provides a single action or reaction. Some people have roleplays where one player plays one character while the other player plays a whole cast of characters. Some players might not like when the other player takes any kind of control of the former's character, calling that "Godmoding.” Some players allow a small degree of that. But it's good to know what level of control you and the other player want before beginning an RP.

3) Duration
RPs can be anywhere from reeeeally long to kinda short. They could recount a brief encounter, or last a character's whole life. In real time, the roleplay could last a few minutes and then end, or several months to indefinitely. Some players may tire of a roleplay that never seems to end. Some players may be dissatisfied with an RP that ends too quickly. It may be prudent to agree upon a good length of RP before starting, or else get a better sense of when a player shows he or she may be getting tired of continuing.

4) Goal
Some people, when playing, have no clear goal in mind and just go with the flow. Others might have scenarios they want to see play out, and so guide their roleplay in that direction. Neither of these things are wrong in any way. But it would be good to ascertain whether either or both have a goal in mind before starting.

5) Continuity
Some roleplays reference or may be affected by previous roleplays, while others may start carte blanche, and that's okay. Sometimes, a roleplay between two players could affect another roleplay between two other players. If they're cool with that, then okay. But it can bring up myriad complications and weirdness.

Again, these aren't "rules" and I'm not trying to "police" anyone, but remembering these things would definitely reduce friction when RPing with yours truly.
