Intellectual property

Here's tonight's annoying question:

How many of you are using artwork stolen from another artist as your avatar?

If you're using another artist's work, did you formally request permission from them to use it?

Oh, right. This is the "internet" where "Information (intellectual property) yearns to be free."

You're right, I guess I never contacted Fumi Ishikawa or the unnamed sprite designers or contacted Konami's legal department to see if a looped animation of their 1998 RPG.  I guess I'm a shitty, terrible person and should be placed in prison.

All of the avatars I have and use are taken from artwork I have gotten from artists

This is mostly a problem on other sites where people are more inclined to pretend to be other people; roleplaying sites for one where in addition to that you also have people using said art as references.

It happens almost all the time but I think there are laws that must be fulfilled:

It may be wrong, but it's essentially true.
Picking up on your theme, getting butthurt over art theft is understandable; stealing from Disney, DreamWorks, or big corporate entities is perfectly OK. I never cease to be amused by people who proclaim "They stole my Sonic art!"

Bwahahahahaha....

You know the routine dear, It's always easier in court when you client says "We was robbed" instead of "Oh, was this yours?"

My avatar is something I created from scratch 24 years ago...In fact, I did register a drawing of Moyomongoose with the U.S. Copyright Office shortly afterwards.
As for my other artwork, with the exception of gifts given, and gifts received, and what very few fan art I've ever done, all my characters are my own creations.

Other than the exceptions I've mentioned, there is the closest I've come to bringing a Disney character into a scenario...One of my characters, Pancho Meerkat, I have vaguely eluded that Timon Meerkat from the movie, Lion King, is one of Pancho's uncles.
