Ok, as of uploading the Split comic on here, I've been getting many questions about things that confuse people about certain plot elements. So I decided to compile every important plot element of both the Chaos comic and Split comic for the readers to better understand the story.
N.I.D.S
Neuro-Immune Deficiency Syndrome (NIDS) is a fictional disease that was in Sonic Adventure 2. It was the disease which Maria had in the game. For you guys being Sonic fans, I'm surprised some of you don't know this.
How Sonic and Chaos were separated:
The machine used had a malfunction in its wiring which caused the emeralds to react negatively thus causing the emeralds to emit negative energy which was absorbed into Chaos' body.
The Rings:
The rings were made using the emeralds for the sole purpose of storing the excess negative energy that was absorbed by Chaos. They're kinda like Shadow's inhibitor rings. Due to some Chaos voodoo magic, the rings, made with the chaos emeralds, split Chaos' mind in two. One half with positive energy (Sonic) and the other with negative energy (Spirit Chaos).
Chaos' Visibility:
I know this was a confusing one and one I didn't fully explain. Anyway, Spirit Chaos is only visible to people who have been created, born, or have a strong connection to Chaos energy. People like Jules, Shadow, and even Knuckles can see Chaos. Chaos though can become invisible due to Chao voodoo magic though only it subconsciously happens when around people. He only discovered this when Sonic and Chaos discovered the emeralds when they started doing their hero-ing when Sonic could only hear him but could not see him. Which explains why Shadow was only able to hear Sonic but not see him when she was getting... you know... should really redo that part.

More Chaos powers
As a spirit, Sonic and or Chaos are able to function like a regular being. Chaos energy is a type of matter, in which case it can come in different forms; Plasma (Chaos Blast, Chaos Spear, etc,), Gas, liquid(Tikaos), and Solid(Chaos Emeralds). When in spirit form, Sonic and Chaos are like a type of Gas and Solid combo, they can go through shit and cannot be seen if they want too(Gas) but they can also pick up stuff and are able to interact physically with people who have Chao energy inside them(Solid).
Anyway, hope this clears up a bit of the plot element some of you were confused on.
