Linkitis

by
What is Linkitis you ask?

Linkitis also known as Hyperlinkosis is a disease that affects people who have little to no computer knowledge.

Linkitis is an affliction that causes the victim to lose all reasoning, compelling them to click on any hyperlink that comes their way, via email, website, popup window etc. The affliction also compels the person to visit websites known to harbor and transmit malware and virus on a hyper regular basis.

At the moment there is no known cure for this affliction. The only way to mitigate and damage caused by the disease is to...

A) Strictly monitor the affected person's online activities.
B) Install protocols on the infected person's computer that prevents them from accessing such online venues like conspiracy theory sites, porn sites, religious sites and any known domains that are know to propagate malicious code.
C) Install (with the patient's permission) monitoring software on all of their electronic devices.
D) Make sure that the patient attends classes on proper PC usage.
E) Try to teach the patient what it means to be internet savvy and how they can become internet savvy.

In the event that you have to implements steps B and C, hope and pray that the infected person is not an Idiot Savant and can easily get around established protocols. If the patient is an Idiot Savant, just reinforce the other steps.

And yes, the afliction is real, my roommate suffers from Linkitis and is in denial and refuses to do anything to cure his affliction.

My mother has this problem. Kinda sad because she's a business major who works in the county IT department.

That is sad, she has the potential to cause all kinds of havoc in that department.

I work in the IT department at my firm and it feels like EVERY DAMN PERSON THERE has this issue save the IT team. We even literally had to put them through a mandatory security awareness training and 6 people still clicked on a phishing email AND put in their company credentials into a spoofed site. Said 6 people are going through the training again. I doubt the results will improve.

I know the feeling. I have a bachelor's degree in IT Security Systems and would so much love to work in my degree field.

My mother in law has it.
She would click EVERYTHING that she sees on facebook and then she would follow whatever instructions, like giving her credit card number. the funny part is she os totally paranoid for everything else, she doesn't trusts anyone, she suspects every little coincidence in her life is the product of a conspiracy against her. Yet she trusts a pop up window that tells her to give her personal information.

My roommate is like that, he is distrustful about anything off line, but online it is a different story.
