Solo, Star Wars, and Lucasfilm

Okay. The following was two replies to another journal talking about the new Solo teaser that came out. I will just copy and paste it below.

-----

(has not seen the trailer as of writing this)
I had written Solo off a long while back due to all the problems they had making the movie. Its become very obvious that the people in charge of over watching all of the Star Wars franchise has no clue what they are doing or what they want in the end. I liked Last Jedi and though has flaws is a good star wars movie. But it was very apparent that they did not have anything planned after Force Awakens and did not give any guidance to Rian Johnson.

For everything wrong happening with the Star Wars franchise, all fingers need to point towards Kathleen Kennedy. All final decisions for the Star Wars films go through her, like all Marvel Studio movies go through Kevin Feige. She is the one that hired Miller and Lord thinking they make a good space western (the description given on what they had planned for Solo) and then allowed them to work to near completion of the shoot before stepping in to say that they had it all wrong. That kind of thing should have been done before principal shooting started. Within the first week at the latest. How long did Kennedy stand around watching all this before she realized it was not working. From most sources, Disney is pretty much giving up on Solo and just wants it out with as less fan fare as possible. They know that the critical success of Last Jedi is not going to matter if the loudest on the internet is saying its trash. And having Solo come out like this afterward is going to make things worse. They are also releasing it in the Summer and not during the Holidays where it likely do better. Word has it that Kennedy wants to see how a SW film does in the summer market.

My guess is that Kennedy was giving more control to the directors to tell the stories of a movie universe. This was what Warner Brothers was trying to do with the DC movies. Look where that got them.

Disney's best option at this point is to break on their contract and fire Kathleen Kennedy. Or at least lower her role down and get someone else to oversee the franchise.

(just seen trailer)
Too clipped and sporadic to really get a feel of it. First impression is similar to he one I had for the first trailer for Star Trek: Beyond, which was not good. However, I think Beyond was the best of the three Abrams produced Star Trek films.

I will also note the thing about Alden 'Needing' acting lessons. It was not that he could not act. It was to help him be more like Ford. Still not good news and makes it seem he was hired on sight more than an audition. Again, faults go to Kathleen Kennedy.

Really, the biggest problem in all of this is that no one asked or wanted this film. Everyone knew enough about Solo's previous story to be satisfied. To show too much ruins the appeal of the character. They are pretty much doing the opposite of what Marvel Studios is doing and giving everyone an origin story.

Disney is starting to fumble with what they acquired. But it can be saved and make more touchdowns. If Solo turns out to be as bad as most are suspecting, they can just ignore it. Go one and wrap up the current trilogy with Abrams as planned and hope it pulls it together and focus on what Rian Johnson is doing for his new Star Wars trilogy which is apparently set way in the universes past. Old Republic? That's great. It'll not connect to hardly any known character and be able to use already given lore while still giving us something new. They also need to start branching out and actually give us new stories outside of anything involving the Skywalkers, or Jedi, or the Sith. Solo said it in New hope that he did not believe in the Force. And he was a well traveled person and seen a lot. Force users need to be super rare and hardly known. It does not need Jedi or Sith to be Star Wars. Show us the Universe. Show us new things and new stories.

While I am babbling, here is some other things they should consider with the Lucasfilm properties.
-Cancel anything dealing with Indiana Jones. Look at the hate Solo is already getting. You think you are going to do better with a younger Jones? Best bet if you really want to do a new Indian Jones film is to go the James Bond route and just hire a new actor all together and just say its Jones. Might work. Never know till you try. Thing is, its not going to work if you try to copy Ford.
-You guys are sitting on possibly the best source for a new series of fantasy films. You guys have Willow. Thats just one film that barely scratched the potential of what was given. That movie can branch off to any fantasy tale you want. You can add to the lore given in the first film easily and make the entire world as you want it. You can set up an international crisis and show off as many creatures as you can in Star Wars. Willow can easily become the new Lord of the Rings.
-Maniac Mansion: the Movie. This one speaks for itself. Horror and comedy are big and can easily cover the PG-13 crowd while also connecting to the fans of the game.

I'm replying to your comments on my page here since they're the same but not in two separate sections.
I agree with pretty much everything you said but one thing always amazes me.
WHAT THE FUCK is up with these producers NOT knowing what's going on with their projects!
I mean we saw it with Superman v Batman to some extent, we saw it in Fan4Suck to a HUGE degree and now this!!

Do they(the producers) just get a single sheet of paper with a few words to the extent of "We're gonna movie with characters using 'splosions and moving around doing stuff in front of camera for two hours" and they throw dump trucks of money at them then get pissed when the get something they weren't expecting!!?
Common!! JEEZE!

SOMEone has to change this policy or we're gonna keep getting shit like those movies on a MUCH more regular basis and that's not good!

I'll have more to talk about later but right now I've got a nasty headache and I don't want to make it any worse thinking about those movies. :D

Not 100% on what happened with S v B. I do know that one was rushed and was not the film Snyder wanted to do, so add that on top of the fact that Snyder was not a good director to handle Superman to begin with. S v B was simply WB panicking at trying to get a Justice League film out ASAP and over looked a LOT of  obvious problems with the script while only thinking of how to get people to come watch the movie. Like why the hell they thought Doomsday was a good idea is beyond me. They actually thought batman fighting superman was not good enough?

With Fan4stick, Lot of that was on the director as well and the film HAD to be released in so form in order to keep the rights. It was pushed back, to the assumed last second. And though he was no longer chairman when it was in principal shoots and reshoots, Tom Rothman was in charge when the film went into pre production and hired Trank to direct. Since Tom hated super hero/comic book movies since day 1, I can see him hiring Trank without any care. Rothman resigned two months later.

And for those reading this and maybe not know, Tom Rothman is the guy who replaced Amy Pascal at Sony film studios. Its a miracle Marvel Studios got Spiderman into the MCU in any shape form with those two involved.

Maybe Amy and Rothman will get hit by something heavy and be taken out of our misery?
It's something to hope for!
