...I wanted to wait until tomorrow to review this movie, because I like to avoid posting more than one journal per day. I couldn't wait. I HAD to talk about this movie after seeing it just now.
I HATED THIS FILM. EVERY SINGLE F***ING MINUTE OF IT. It is easily one of the worst films I've ever seen.
First, some background. I LOVE Ghost Rider, particularly the Danny Ketch incarnation (the second Rider). That was the incarnation that introduced all of the Rider's classic tricks beyond a flaming skull and motorcycle. The magical chain, riding on walls, the Penance Stare... and the Rider was a GOOD GUY, rather than a demonic character.
I HATED Ghost Rider 1. The movie was TERRIBLE. It set out to do a bunch of things, but did them all WRONG. It had a comedic tone, it was a WESTERN, it cast Nicolas Cage as Johnny Blaze... It was BAD.
THIS movie made Ghost Rider 1 look like freakin' Casablanca or Gone With the Wind. Now, it DID get the tone of the movie right, a horror, spooky, dark and gritty feel... but that's ALL it did right. Nicolas Cage gives a downright bizarre and cartoonish performance. The CGI is TERRIBLE. The fight scenes are LAME. Everything that's supposed to be bad*** comes off as boring. The villain is WEAK. The Rider doesn't ONCE use the Penance Stare, despite it being his main power... The writing is strange, stilted, and BAD... The filming is downright bizarre too, with comic-y still panels interjected with random CGI/Live Action/artsy BS. Nothing stays still... No one makes an impact outside of a bad one...
Marvel has MASTERED the comic book movie. They know how to make their heroes into blockbusters. They've had flops, like Elektra and Ang Lee's Hulk.... But they've never had a COMPLETE FAILURE like this. It's lucky they've got the Avengers on the way, because this movie alone is almost enough to ruin their whole company with how BAD it is.
Is it the worst movie I've seen? ...Maybe... Skyline was pretty f***ing horrible... And I HATED, HATED Van Helsing... but if this isn't number 1 on my list of bad movies, it's definitely in my top 3. It took me FIFTEEN MINUTES from the beginning of the film to realize how much I HATED this movie, and I realized I still had over an hour left to go of misery.
I could make a good Ghost Rider film. Hell, Ghost Rider practically LENDS itself to being a good movie. Focus on the Jekyll and Hyde nature of his existence, give the Rider his own personality that Blaze works against. Somehow, no one understood that, and made THIS POS instead.
SS250's Final Verdict: Ghost Rider... DO NOT SEE THIS FUCKING MOVIE!!! AND STOP CASTING NICK CAGE AS A SUPERHERO!!!!! ><;;; Grade: F MINUS!!!
