Lost my job today

I don't want anyone to feel bad for me, please. I'm not looking for sympathy. Truth to tell, I'm relieved in a way because I wasn't thrilled about the idea of spending the rest of my life making fuel filters. But it is a bit of a set back and I only mention it because I've discussed getting art with people and this is likely going to delay things until I can find a new job. I am very sorry about that and I will try to get to you all just as soon a I possibly can.

At least it means I won't have to haul my sorry ass out of bed at 5:30 on a freezing Sunday morning this week. I'm probably going to cuddle with my girl until she goes to bed and finish off the bourbon from New Years

Yeah, it really kind of is. I hate losing the paycheck, but I hated working there, too. Maybe my next job will be more pleasant and it's nice to finally have a weekend that's a real weekend.

Sigh. Been there, done that, filed the unemployment.

It always sucks. I hope that if you're in a job, it lasts and if you're not, you find one super fast.

Note the past tense in my first comment. Right now, I'm working two jobs.

I'm not sure what's more stressful, being out of work or having both employers want me full time!

My last steady job ended when the Pilgrim's Pride chicken processing plant in Clinton, Arkansas shut down for good in the autumn of 2008. The plant had been in business at different locations in Clinton (starting out as Clinton Poultry and Egg), and under different ownership since 1957 (been in operation for over 50 years).

I was on the sanitation shift (afternoon shift. 2:00 pm to 10:00 pm). All our shift did was clean the plant and equipment with high pressure hot water hoses to USDA standards (easy job). Morning and night shifts had the fast pace, mundane, messy job of running the birds as they came along on shackle hoops and conveyer chains.

The economy in our area was so bad when the plant closed down, we were eligible to draw unemployment for two years.
And we were not required to maintain that list of places where job applications were submitted (there were several zones within the State of Arkansas at that time keeping that list was not required)...I guess they knew the jobs were not out there unless we took the hour's drive to Little Rock or Batesville looking for work.

When the plant closed, nearly 400 folks lost their jobs...Clinton has a population of about 2,600...almost one sixth of the town suddenly unemployed.

Man. That had to really suck. I guess I'm lucky in that there have been no major plant closings like that which hurt the entire area. When it comes to factory work, one of if not the main employer here is Toyota. I didn't work for them, but the factory I worked for made parts for their cars. I don't see them shutting their doors any time soon. But at least the unemployment office and everyone was understanding of your situation, and didn't pile even more crap on your shoulders. Cold comfort at best, I'm sure, but I guess it's well to be grateful for small mercies.

In the respect of the concessions made for us, it wasn't as bad as we all thought things would have been.
Not only were the chicken plant employees out of a job, so were those who worked for the chicken farms (broiler houses), and those who drove the tractor trailer rigs that delivered the chickens from the broiler houses to the processing plant, as well as those who worked for the feed mills that supplied grain for the broiler houses.
Local hardware suppliers who the chicken plant bought hardware from saw a slowdown in business.

Eight months earlier, that cat 5 tornado we had in February of 2008 destroyed a factory in town that made bass boats...It never rebuilt and opened up.
For weeks after that tornado hit, you would occasionally see torn up bass boat parts in the woods, in fields and on the sides of highways as far as 5 miles away from where the tornado went through (some parts, including consoles, decking, seats, steering components, motors, wire harnesses, instrument panels, which were not yet assembled to a bass boat).
A lot of boats still on the assembly line were destroyed and blown away with the factory when it took a direct hit...One employee was killed when the boat factory was hit.

Thanks! Except maybe for retail or fast food stuff, I don't think it would be too awfully hard to find a much better job than the one I had!

Thank you, and I agree. To be honest, I'm not too torn up about it. I hate losing the paycheck, but factory work is frankly the pits. It may well work out for the best at that.

I feel you.. I went years without.   I've been at my current office job for 1 year, 1 month, and 9 days, not that I'm counting and paranoid of losing it even though I made employee of the month.  Work force is rough and life takes no prisoners.  Still behind you and rooting for you in whatever you do Grace.

Fingers crossed and best of luck to you! But I know all about being paranoid of losing the job. I was always afraid of losing mine the whole time I worked there. Not because of performance, because they never had a problem with that, but just because life like to throw you these curve balls sometimes. Hope it all works out fine for you!

I feel you.  The only thing worse than employment is unemployment.  May your time in the reserve army of labor be a short one.
