Ya know what~

I think I might be able to get used to the wacom tablet after all  It still hurts a bit, but the results I'm seeing lessen it to a degree lol.  Now, to get used to doing cool stuff with GIMP.  I don't know if I'll post anything this weekend since I have some stuff for finals to get done, but I will keep at it off and on.  I'd still rather use the netbook touchscreen, but for the time being that's just not going to cut it.

More updates to come  ^^

Eh... I wouldn't suggest GIMP for drawing, to be honest. It's not very... good. You should give SAI a proper try, even if it requires using Windows. You might even get it to work in WINE, though I've never personally tried. :>

SAI works in Wine, but poorly.  Lines come out jagged and without pressure sensitivity.  From what I've seen SAI is great, but my computer setup in Ubuntu is so much easier to work with than it is in Windows.  So for now, I'll just keep working with GIMP.

I like my Wacom tablet. Try Artrage for sketching (http://www.artrage.com/). There is a free version hiding somewhere on that site.... here it is! (http://www.artrage.com/artrage-demos.html)

Thanks for the suggestion, but while I know there are plenty of other options for Windows, there are fewer available for Linux.    ArtRage might work in WINE under Linux, but it'd probably suffer the same problems that I'm getting with SAI in Wine.

Oops! I thought AR worked with Unix for some reason. I guess it's just Windows and Mac.
