Well things are calming down again

I've been working on the game, though Aval0n has been a little AFK again so I've just been dittoing around.  Last week I had pitched the idea of creating CG backgrounds to replace the static picture backgrounds in BSC.  Creating a demo to set up for you all was a lot more difficult then I thought it would be, and would end up delaying the game longer then expected so I'm gonna put the idea on the back burner for now.  I ended up basin the pictures on the first version of BSC since in the end I did like those ones better.  My main reason for changing them the first time was because they still had minor flaws that I had come to notice and just couldn't overlook.

For example, in the living room of the original demo, as well as outside the original house, you can clearly see a for sale sign as well as a big old Winnebago parked outside the house and reflecting off of the window.  I just couldn't get over that and continued to look for a new house.  Anyway, people were asking for some of the CG background examples so I thought I'd post them in an update journal to give you all an idea of what I was talking about.  Any and all feedback is appreciated, and chances are I'll end up using this idea in another game.

Not much else to update on.  I've got no tests in the next couple of weeks so I got a change to breath now.  Hopefully Aval0n will have what I need soon and I can add the finishing touches.  Until next time.

It is a bit far. usually the roll is placed beside the toilet, often positioned so that it is as high as half-way up the tank and horizontally at the middle of the toilet seat. But maybe Vanilla saw an ad on the TV. "Middle-of-the-Wall-Roll: When you want a room to be balanced but still inspire those painful stretches and hilarious topples during your bathroom breaks! Fun for the whole family!"

so i did some cut and pasting lol and this was the result.
i think they would work great in the game. better than the photo IMO.

Hopefully EA won't sue you for even thinking about using Sims 3 content in a game like this. >.>

Also, as an idea, why not have someone just draw better backgrounds? CG doesn't always look better just because it can provide depth. It would be worth consideration, especially if you can find someone helpful enough to do it on the cheap.
FeatheredAdventures
6 years, 8 months ago
I've already been sued once by someone completely unrelated to this project.  I already do fear the day when Sega comes knocking at my door, but considering how much Sims 3 porn already exists out there I'm not too worried about EA coming after me if I used these.  ^v^
zibi711
6 years, 8 months ago
well 2 things pop up in mind. 1 sega cant sue you due to the fact that its a game based on art work the charecters do have minor flaws from the originals. and that its a free fan fic so they cant say anything your not makeing anything off them. and if ya need elverage put my name on it and i'll be happy to counter sue for ya. like i said i know a looott about the law. so to speak. and also. sims cant sue you for usieng the picks of the inside of a house. its like me takeing picks off it and puting it up for people to see. regardless how you look at it. as long as no profit is made off the game. and no donations do not count as money made off the game. because you would have to be selling the game. then yea. no harm should come to you. or AvalonX
blazenwhiper
6 years, 8 months ago
Actually it all depends on were the pictures are from. If it is indeed from someting you yourself took then no, they can't sue you.

BUT if its a picyure he found that belongs to them, them he'd have to get permission from that person first.

But since this is a free project i highly doubt even if the latter occured, they'd even bother.
zibi711
6 years, 8 months ago
all he would have to do is make an edit. take the pick and add something or remove something from it. change it from the original and they cant say anything because then it no longer is the original
blazenwhiper
6 years, 8 months ago
It has to be edited quite a bit. Atleast 30% of the image must be altered for it to be yours. but yeah Edit it enough and its yours. Nothing they can do about it since it really doesn't belong to them anymore like you said.
zibi711
6 years, 8 months ago
yep though really 30% is really not that much considering. its better than starting at 0 and making it your self. lol
beige
6 years, 8 months ago
Actually, I've had to look into it a great deal for the purposes of my artwork. There is no "30% difference" thing. That's a myth. If a court of law can find that the image used was taken by someone else without their permission, then there's no loophole, no way out of it. Things like pics of public places are a little harder to prove originality, but indoor shots are a little more on the rare side. Even if you remove a couch and replace it with another, or change the scenery through the window there's still the possibility of being sued unless you yourself have taken the photos. Admittedly you'd have to have a magistrate irate enough to bother with such a case as well...

Basically, IF the owner of the images somehow found them in game and IF they were a big enough prick to sue then you'd have trouble. I doubt either will happen in this case.

On a side note, I love the CG stuff. More than the current screens at least. Keep up the good work, greatly anticipating the final version. I'll also add my ability to 3d model to the list of others raising their hands. I'd rather not post my portfolio publicly as I'm a children's book illustrator so the nature of this particular project may not look too good for me if it got out. But let me know if you want a hand with anything.

Funny story about that, that I forgot to add in the journal.  I did try to recreate the house in Sims 3 for the current game but I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to put everything together properly to make an organized house.  It will take a little more time but I think maybe I could pull it off.  Until then though I'm just going to focus on the game.

3ds Max can do some nice 3d rooms if that is what you were looking for...find someone going to a 3d art school and they most likely will either get the program for free or can do like I did and get the educational version, which would work since you aren't selling these.
BrodieBoy

though I really enjoyed the CG backgrounds, I do think they would be better used in a different game. Only because I've gotten so used to the live action BG's. But like I said, they looked leagues better than I was thinking they would (no offence, I'm just not a big fan of CG).

Nah you wouldn't be cheating, I think you are using a great strategy. Can you make it morning, daytime, sunset, nighttime to go with the time clock in BSC?
FeatheredAdventures

That was the other thing I forgot to mention in the journal as well.  One of the pros to using these prerendered backgrounds is that I can create betting lighting situation from day to night rather then trying to manipulate a static picture.

The CG backgrounds gives it a somewhat less real feeling. Since this is pretty much a simulation (a depraved one, but still), wouldn't it be best to keep the old backgrounds?

Anyway, thanks for the work, hopefully Aval0nX will show up soon. And well, I can only hope we have the game before March :3

Background concepts look great! And I'm guessing if you're designing them you can alter them to fit changes in the script/animations, which I bet would be handy. Won't be completely sold on the idea until you have the animations integrated with the backgrounds, but looks like a solid first step.
Keep up the good work, and let us know if you need us to badger Avalon for you. ;-)

all in all i like it , just need a few tweaks here and there , like the toilet paper should be closer to the toilet , and possibly adding a laptop to the master bedroom on the nightstand next to the bed and the back wall of bedroom has same pic as the kitchen . and lastly the outside looks a bit off (backyard i mean) . but with that said i enjoy the new stuff alot but as some others have said i liked the newer live style better then the older live and if could change the newer live into cg i would love to see that and think it would work nicely but thats just my thoughts

Wow. Those 3D backgrounds are gorgeous!

About artworks, pictures and animations: you really can relase new versions or add packs after releasing core version. It can also be very good method to get some serious donations. by making new pictures/actions/clothes as a requst made by donators.
It can be fun for both sides this way.
BTW This new 3D made rooms are really awesome, and really took alot of work.

Thoselook pretty cool.  I like them.  I think it might be better to use the cg models instead of the photos because of the clash between the cartoon characters and the realistic background.

In a desperate attempt to please everyone, why not simply include both the photos AND the cg and include a toggle switch in the options menu?   Or would that be too much work?

Anyhoo, this all looks amazing and I can barely contain myself in anticipation for the finalized game.

If it's the former, could you upload the house somewhere so anyone can play with it if they choose?
LordRaken

Looks like I'm in the minority here but I prefer the real life picture backgrounds. The shiny CGI backgrounds would clash with the flat finish of the art work. Currently the real life picture and the artwork have a more homogeneous look which makes it more plausible for them to be part of the same world.

If you threw up another sample with an art piece superimposed over the CGI backgrounds I think people might see what I am talking about.

Still, they look good on their own. I just don't think they will blend with the art.
SoftFurry

3d environment with 2d characters always clash.... deal with tit
LordRaken
6 years, 8 months ago
Not what I was talking about, bucko. But that is another good reason to prefer the picture backgrounds. The sims backgrounds have this CGI shiny quality that completely clashes with the mat finish on the drawn art.

Besides, why should I get over it? The whole reason our feathered friend posted these are so that he can get feedback on them. This is mine. (you get over it)

Eh? I don't remember that bathroom background! D: Looking good tho and from someones cut and paste job above it really does look like the drawings would fit into them a lot better than in the pictures.

Not only does it give a more merged feel to the drawings, but it would also allow you to place the characters in certain locations around that room with a bit more ease (I think) and that'd really help if you ended up with something like the couch 'tickling game' arc :3

I'm going to have to go back to some random porn site that I remember has this game on it and look through all the old versions till I find that bathroom background now cus it's bugging me lol

Smexy 3D photos!
I do like the Idea of CG backgrounds rather then real photos.
But oh'z no'z you delayed the game!
Rawr hear come'z troll'zor

I actually did something like this for a project.
I created a 3D city then rendered it with textures and in wireframe (Black lines instead of the usual white) .
Ran the textured image through a color filter limiting the colors and then through a dry brush filter.
Placed the wireframe on top of the textured and shrank it to the correct size.
Created a really nice anime looking city.
But that is WAY too complicated lol!

Your CG looks awesome!
For fast results, I would just use games like sims or other building games and create your backgrounds.
Your way too busy to do everything at once.

I have about 6 years of experience with Autodesk 3ds Max. With my certification coming this March, I am beefing up my portfolio as well. 95% of my freelance jobs are confidential so it nothing I could put on my portfolio until their merchandise is out and their “ok”.

I am sure if FeatheredAdventures need help he would let us know. I offered my service about 2 - 4 months ago to offer static images for full fledge house with all the room scenes with morning, noon, and night.  He said he got everything pretty much covered back then. Now since he is using CG I don't know what kind of file format he will need to import the 3d objects.

I am pretty sure he would ask us to build something for his next game if he need help, they have worked so far into this BSC game, all the time they put into it…. It something they took pride for. If you spent 80+ hours on something, import it in the game, debug it, fix the lighting, textures etc. etc. to make it work, it is hard to let that go.

FeatheredAdventures,
You got yourself an 3d modeling/Animator team (for free!) if you want to increase the quality (as an example)  the couches – making them sag over the weight of the characters sitting and so on, you know where to PM us.

the new backgrounds are a marked improvement, though unless you were planning to work a bathtub scene or a vibrating showerhead, I'd say you should replace that showertub in the bathroom with a regular shower.....since it makes no sense to have it, and not take advantage of it.

Hey there, long time fan that finally made a profile here so that I could view more of the stuff that was hidden to guests, heh.

Okay, I can see what you mean now in terms of the CG backgrounds and I think that most would agree that it holds much potential yet at the same time, we just aren't sure how it would really work or how we would feel about it without a workable demo. If you could put out a quick demo this week with just those 4, it would help give a bit more of a feel for it.

Of course, the deal always is that it would delay you further. I say just take what you have and pack it into a CG demo of what you already have (just replace the pictures...isn't that hard right? *not sure*) and let us mess around with it. If you can't do that in like a day or two worth of time.....then aye, just put it on the back-burner and forget about it for now. I like them more than I thought I would and would love to try out that which I just proposed.

Hmmm....I don't mind the CG...but there is just something...off about them ...I think its the lighting. I like the new cg rooms. I also think that they look great. I wish that you had time to implement them. Though I do not care for either bathroom. The shower in the cg is just not large enough foe what I hope to see there. The location of the toilet and sink in both just seem to me to block off two much of the room. And though there is a swimming pool, a hot tub would have been an interesting addition. Not that I am proposing any changes.

Thanks for all the work on BSC. Looking forward to what you and Aval0n do after. I hope in a year or so you all decide to update BSC with all that any new tech provides, and incorporating many of the ideas that could not be done.

Keep up the studies.

Does that mean you were thinking about making the art more 3D rather than 2D or posibly slowly changing it over to 3D after it is released, and if so what does Aval0nX think about it? Lets see there nice but,
Living room. - prefer the top on as brighter and easier to see things.
Kitchen. - Both very nice but if had to choose would stick with original top pic at moment.
Batherroom, - Like new view for this looks great its bright clear and very nice only part suggest may want look at is picture of view out side as looks more like a painting sort of thing then window at moment. [but still looks great.]
Vanillas room. would probably stay with original in my opinion because bed looks flat in new one were in original looks real and confy. [And window looks better i think]

They look inpressive and hope you do offer rooms for review opinions nice work can wait to see new game...
[For most part would go for the original at moment.]

And any info on whats bin added to it or pics so forth would be great to see.
