The Russian town was at -31 C with the wind chill this morning (Dec.29), while the Fort dropped to -45 C.
The last time it was this cold was on Jan. 4, 2015, when the mercury dipped to -30.2 C.
"It's not just the temperature, it's going to be the little bits of wind that come along," said Dan Kulak, meteorologist with Environment Canada. "Even if you get 10 to 15 kilometre per hour wind, with temperatures down around that -30 mark, wind chills are actually in the mid minus 40's."
Fort residents who aren't enjoying the chilly conditions could consider a holiday in the North Pole, where it's -31 C with the wind, or the South Pole, at a balmy -19 C with the wind chill.
"The first thing you have to ask youself is 'do I really have to head out today?' If you don't have to go anywhere, consider postponing your plans," explained Kulak. "If you really do decide to head out somewhere, make sure you're bundled up for the weather."
These prairie cold spells typically last around a week to two weeks and aren't uncommon for December and January.
This snap, however, is expected to ease up in the new year with the mercury climbing to -9 C by Monday.
