AOL Instant Messenger is gone.

by
At about 1:15 this morning AIM shut down for good.

There wasn't even a goodbye message, just a sudden login failure error.

Sigh. The AIM client itself sucked, but the protocol was lightweight, reliable, and well supported, and everyone I talked to was on it.

Now I need to use half a dozen different clients.

If you were any of these people on AIM... send me a message.

What does dialup have to do with AIM?

And to answer your question, millions of people use dialup because there are large areas that simply cannot get anything else.

And it's not just rural areas, either. Chunks of downtown Seattle, for instance, can't get cable, DSL, or fiber.

I've heard, I've use to do AIM to talk with people but haven't used since 2008, but it started me off on talking with people in the US, for that I'm gonna miss it.

20 years and this is the thanks it gets? I think this is the work of that Ajit Pai or whatever. Still I never used AIM before. *heavy sigh* The world is screwed up.

The AIM shutdown had nothing to do with that. AIM only had about 500,000 users left. (At its peak, there were over 100 million.)

While it probably didn't cost much to run, the new corporate overlords didn't want to be bothered with it.

Oh. That explains it much. Its kinda like how Netflix and such drove Blockbuster out of business. Since Discord and other related sites are making it obsolete.
