I really wish Star Trek Discovery was good I just can't get into it. The show feels like it's trying too hard to be edgy....Orville is more like Star Trek, for one thing it's way more optimistic.
Lol, I think Discovery is fine, and it's just trying to be a little too much like the recent Star Trek films. All action and everything. Also, how far in are you? Have you clued in yet on the whole thing about Ash Tyler? This is my biggest problem with it, the series seems to be focusing too much on a single storyline, and everything adjacent to that almost seems like filler, rather than going out and exploring and encountering strange alien life-forms and cultures and stuff... though, I think what's there is pretty good. Then they throw something like a "time crystal" into the mix, and you remember how ridiculous Star Trek is, haha. XD
That said, Orville... well... every Star Trek character has always had their own quirks and personality flaws and everything. Orville tends to begin with the light-hearted banter, and at some point transitions seamlessly into beign an ACTUAL Star Trek episode or something. It's incredible! So incredible that I sometimes find myself forgetting for a moment that it isn't actually Star Trek, and marvel at that fact. I think the main problem with Discovery, though, is that Star Trek is... well... Star Trek. And Orville, by virtue of NOT being Star Trek, has a LOT more freedom with what they can do with the classic tried and tested formula. Because it isn't bound by the strict rules of the established Star Trek canon, and is it's own unique, original franchise... you know, instead of a remake or something, because that's been a popular trend for awhile... ugh.
