i need computer helps please

on and off, i'm having trouble with my laptop lagging
mostly, it's when i watch videos in chrome or typing in skype
the audio in videos will run smoothly, but the picture will freeze for a few seconds, then go really fast until it's caught up with the audio
at the same time, i'm sometimes greeted by a loading circle in youtube, with the message "if playback doesn't begin shortly try restarting your device", sometimes it resolves itself, most of the times it'll play the video with no audio at all (until i reload the tab multiple times or give it a few minutes to.. i don't know, consider it's existence in the vastness of the universe?)
i don't really think it's a chrome issue, since it sometimes happens in firefox (though far less frequently) and skype lagging happens, but i don't know.

i tried: activating and de-activating hardware acceleration, no change, it's the newest version of chrome, uh... i have avira antivirus, win7, my laptop is ~3-4ish years old

i stopped being able to fix my own issues back when WinXP expired, now i'm just a DAU (dumbest assumable user, and rightfully ashamed for it)... can someone help me? or maybe point me to a website where i can ask for help better?

Oh, I have this problem too sometimes. Maybe do you have too many tabs open while you use Internet? Did you install all the uploads offered by Windows? I think you have the latest version of everything (Chrome and Skype) so it's probably not a serious thing.

I miss WinXP too sooooo much! T.T

hey! thanks for the reply
i often run firefox and chrome at the same time, chrome for video watching and firefox to browse.
it usually doesn't give me issues, by itself, so... hm :/
(and i'm only one tab in chrome and 2-3 tabs of firefox)
win updates are on automatic, so they get installed whenever they come out

Try clearing your history, cookies and cache. It will log you out of everything but it might help. Also, double check your Java update.

I used to get that years ago...I think it was caused by not enough RAM for everything that I was running - I had to either close down a lot of programs or upgrade to get rid of it...

open the task manager, does chrome eat 100% of the cpu? does skype eat 100% of the cpu?

Try to review your extension list in chrome. Sometimes apps can install rogue extensions (full of spam, crapware..etc..) on chrome on firefox without asking.

Also, are you using wifi?  have you tried using a ethernet cable to see if the problem persists? this could mean your internal wireless card is about to die.
You can buy a cheapo USB ones on amazon.

Could also check your video drivers. Sometimes newer ones are better - other times, not so much.
But either way, video decoding acceleration is often disabled by browsers due to crashes in drivers.
