Did you know?

There's no such thing as a 2nd amendment here in Brazil therefore it is illegal for civilians to bear firearms and yet the ammount of people killed here by those every year is over 4 times the number in the U.S.

I actually support the right to have a gun for self defense. But it amazes me that someone could buy all those rifles and ammo and still not "raise some eyebrows" from the authorities.

The problems in the US are "legitimate" businesses in many locations are allowed to sell firearms specifically designed for mass murder - even to people that are known to be unstable lunatics.

Plus a culture that treats guns as toys and the easy answer for everything, though it's clearly not.
This delusion was in act in the wild west, it was not a happy peaceful time, people were randomly shot all the time, gangs with the most guns ruled with terror.
General culture condition plays a big role too, if people are happy with their life then they are far less likely to get into trouble & be stressed. A bad life means insecurity ,means trigger happy, pissed off and mad at the world & authority seen as keeping them oppressed. Too many bad days, no hope and one thing too many goes wrong and anyone snaps.

Media doesn't help, TV shows glorify gun toting hotheads as role-models, no, in reality those people are the ones that end up going on killing sprees. Then the news practically glorifies mass murder AND even often tells everybody how to do it too (ad revenue).

This cultural degradation is rampant in police issues as well, where all are armed, which makes everybody nervous and ready to fight or flight, especially given even the slightest misunderstandings keep resulting in the deaths of people.
Countries with less % of gun deaths tend to have unarmed diplomatic cops sent to consult common non-violent matters, the armed ones are kept away in the BG. That way people don't need to feel like they're going to be shot for no reason...
But a common BS criticism to that is like "well how will they defend themselves if things go wrong?"
A cop is supposed to be a literal hero, doing the right thing like saving people and moderating disputes.
Heroic jobs require understanding you might get harmed or killed doing your job, any that think their lives are more important than random civilians do not belong in nor deserve that job.
Besides, the armed ones get shot too, if anything slightly more likely since they're perceived as a more immediate threat.

Right to protect self & family with sufficient firearms, okay, but must prove trained & responsible just like with a car.
A psycho with a serious history of threatening & harming people, being violently irrational, nope.

But this is a nation that despises intellect, covets violence and irrational gut feelings.
So expecting any obvious solutions to be considered is a waste of time.
The human race either learns or dies. It is a choice few bother with.

The point of the second amendment is an ultimate recourse in case of a tyrannical government. Something I personally thing is becoming more and more feasible seeing our current administration. A bunch of bolt action rifles and 8 shot 9mm pistols wont really do any good in that situation.

I'd somewhat agree, but things have gotten to the point that dictators simply find out who is resisting and call "hits" or VX them all to death (recent examples from N.Korea, Syria, Russia).
By that logic, millions of people would need GPS guided long range bunker-busting missiles & fall-out shelters to resist if the US gov went fully tyrannical.
The difference between a shotgun & armor busting assault riffles means little.
Millions of responsible armed civilians is good deterrent  for invasion & tyranny, but every unstable loon armed to the teeth gives excuse to disarm all.

Simple solution. You need a license to drive a car. Make a firearms license. One short class and you're good. As for the mentally unstable... if our healthcare wasent such a god damn joke then more people could go get help. We have a horrible amount of untreated mental disease because people just can't afford to get the help they need.

Yep...that's what I think should be done. Also people with such license would be required to regularly check in at the "Firearm Department" to renew it after having their mental state and criminal record throughly examined.

The thing is, you have to background check for any firearms sales in almost every state. Doesn't do SHIT for most people. Seasoned criminals have alternate sources and first time criminals will pass. There needs to be a better way. But one side wants no regulation and the other side wants to throw the baby out with the bathwater. So as usual until people learn to be moderates nothing will change.

Around here also there are discussions about allowing firearms. The funniest thing I can't have it for self defense or for fun (of course not hurting anyone) but bad guys anyway have ways to get it. Moreover there's a war not so far away and there are a lot of illegal weapons in the country.

Stephen Paddock most likely got those rifles the same way criminals get their weapons when they don't want to draw attention to themselves... He got them from the black market.

I read somewhere that most (if not all) the weapons found at the hotel apartment and his house were legally bought <=\

I agree with you 150% and then some.
A few folks I use to know who are from some of those eastern Asian countries tell me you can not as so much as have a BB gun without it being against the law in those countries they are from...But in those same countries, there street gangs (some on dirt bikes and scooters) who have weapons such as;
Num-chucks
Throwing stars
Broom handles with razor blades on the business end
Shovel handles with #40 and #60 spike nails driven through them
Axe handles
Billy clubs
24 inch steel pipes...some of them with molten lead poured in one end for weight
Knives with the blades coated in mercury
3 foot length sections of chain
Machetes
Tire irons
Socks with a big rock in the end of them (used like a chainlock)
Hatchets
Wheel barrow staves
black-jacks
And a lot of those gang members are skilled in martial arts, and in many towns the police are afraid of them...
...A gun is the only thing that will stop them.
