Dear God, my journal lists of this year are looking like a fucking Hollywood memorial.
This one will be short, because I honestly don't think Tobe Hooper was a good director. Now stop bitching in the comments and finish reading before you hit enter.
I do admire him. Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a prime example of how a low budget horror can unsettle and scare without having to resort to gore. The film was premium torture porn, and did it without the use of graphical content aside from one simple (and dangerous stunt) of a chainsaw to the leg and some blood. The film was unsettling to watch because the making of the film itself was unsettling. I suggest looking up the making of the movie, the real tortured people in the film was the entire crew in making the movie. The scene towards the end with the lady tied to the chair and the insane family of cannibals was not really acting. They were near insane for real by that point of the shoot due to the heat and conditions they were working in.
Poltergeist is one of my all time favorite horror films from ever since I saw it for the first time as a child. But I give more credit for the movie to Speilberg (who produced it) than to Hooper. I am sure Steven ghost directed the film.
What I admire of Hooper was the way in how he was brave to go against the norm. He get an idea of how a movie should be and he go with it, which is how we ended up with the sequel of Texas Chainsaw Massacre being a comedy. It is how we got movies such as LifeForce, which is about a vampire from outer space. Based on a book. And both of those films came through fucking Cannon Productions. XD
So, I don't think he was as good of a director as others think. Just okay. But he sure as hell left a huge stamp on the horror genre, and for that I thank him and will remember him.
